From SI: about Freddie kitchens: lucky to be alive

The Cardinals are lucky there wasn't a death on the practice field Wednesday. Quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens went through morning meetings at the Cards' Tempe facility and was OK. Out on the field for an OTA practice, the 38-year-old Kitchens was about to put the quarterbacks through their footwork drills -- not their favorite part of practice -- when he put his hands on his knees, bent over, and felt a little dizzy. When it's 103 degrees outside, these things can happen.
"Freddie is as tough of a guy as you will ever meet,'' said Carson Palmer, "and he's not about to miss a practice. He complained about some tightness in his chest, jokingly. It was kind of funny at first but then it wasn't funny. Freddie is lucky we have a phenomenal training staff ... They saved his life.''
The training staff, led by Tom Reed, told Kitchen to come inside, and he lay on one of the training tables. The trainers worried he might have a heart problem. He was dispatched to a hospital and, within four hours of walking off the practice field, was in surgery to repair an aortic dissection. He had a tear in his aorta, which can lead to very rapid blood loss. Eighty percent of the cases result in death, and 50 percent of the time death occurs before the patient gets to the hospital. Kitchens was lucky. Smart trainers, and nine-and-a-half hours of surgery, saved his life. "That was close,'' said coach Bruce Arians, who was at the hospital with Kitchens' wife 'til 1:30 a.m. Kitchens is recovering nicely, I was told over the weekend. He's a lucky man

Glad to hear he's ok... Kitchens, like all of Bama's bad QBs, loved to show out against Ole Miss.. Never fails.

Fat Freddie sure could spin it. All while holding a Bud Light can! Glad they got him fixed up.

Glad to hear he's ok.
On another Freddie kitchens note: I've heard he went into the stands after a heckler when he was playing baseball for the Tide. Can anyone confirm or deny?

That's scary. I believe that's what killed actor John Ritter.

Damn. That is scary. Sounds like he owes those trainers some drinks.
I was in school at the same time as Freddie and that dude would hit on EVERY girl, all the time. And he was fricking terrible at it.
Like, literally, he walked up to a group of us at a bar and said "I'm Freddie Kitchens. Who wants to frick me?"

So you're saying he cast a wide net?
I remember the time ol Freddie said he was as good as a receiver as Toderick Malone. Think they may have played high school together. Glad he's OK, ol Freddie..

when you're the qb at Bama...that's usually all it takes lool....Freddie was a baller.

I always said kitchens was one or two passes from being remembered as a great. he sailed one against UT that wouldve kept us undefeated that year and that was when they had peyton. who knows how the year unfolds if we win that one

Tell you one thing, that night he and Danny Wurf slung the ball together....that was a hell of a game

That is beyond close. Kitchens may not have seen the reaper but the reaper was there and had him by the scruff of the neck when those trainers sent him to the hospital. Living through an aortic tear just doesn't happen -- not under circumstances like this where you're not already in a hospital and being watched for one. And to make things worse it's a painful way to go as well.
Talk about lucky.
Talk about lucky.

yeah, someone was looking after him for sure.....going from no heart problems to a 10 hour surgery is pretty crazy....
