An officer who confronted the driver saw a clown mask on the floorboard, a furry hat on the seat, and a handgun tucked in the man’s crotch, according to the report. The man was ordered out, where he was handcuffed and the gun secured, police said.

The officer then noted that he found a pair of latex gloves and a bag containing the residue of marijuana.

The second officer also found a handgun in the floorboard beside the passenger, along with a dust mask and latex gloves, all described as “armed robbery gear,” according to the report.

Now, I'm no lawyer. And while these guys certainly seem up to no good, can a cop really jump to the conclusion that these two guys were going to commit an armed robbery based on the circumstantial evidence in their car?

It's not like they were toting automatic weapons and bullet-proof vests.

- Latex Gloves
- A clown mask
- A furry hat
- A dust mask
- Two hand guns
- A bag with marijuana residue

The weed residue and hand guns are enough to charge them with something, but we're really going to drag their odd fashion choices into this? C'mon UGAPD

The players were former basketball player Demario Mayfield and football player Ricardo Crawford, btw.

I feel like we should get Fulmer Cup points for something this ridiculous, despite the fact that they are former players.

Right? Gotta keep the streets clean of them clown masks and funny looking hats!

And given the UGAPD's propensity for smelling marijuana that isn't there, I'm going to wager that the "marijuana residue" is actually saw dust or oregano.

What's the law on guns in your vehicle for GA? Can you not have one loaded? Does it have to be concealed?

Were they charged with possibly attempting armed robbery in the future?

if you have a permit. it's not like LA where its an extension of your home.

ETA: Regarding loaded weapon. It must be loacked away or seperated from ammo, without permit

I don't carry so I'm not too clear on it. Though, I do know people who do and who have permits to do so. My guess is they were arrested for having the guns on campus.

This, along with the filed off serial number.

Is this an actual thing? Unless the cops have intel from a tip or one of the guys saying something to suggest that these two were conspiring to commit armed robbery, a simple traffic stop and search of the vehicle with the aforementioned items doesn't seem like it warrants enough info to suggest armed robbery. Just doesn't add up to me (but, again, I'm no lawyer so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm wrong)

No, thats what I was alluding to. They were more than likely charged with possession andf other stuff. The quip you mentioned are just notes the officer made.

Witch hunt? for notating an observation from the found items in the car? If an officer finds the tools to make meth, but no meth, and notates it on a report for an arrest of another crime. is that a witch hunt? Come on now.

Getting caught for breaking the law is not a witch hunt

"possession of armed robbery gear"

Is there a list somewhere? It all looks very suspicious, or maybe just one of the more bizarre coincidences ever.

No it's not, which these guys totally were (I said int he OP they seemed to be up to no good). But without them having said anything to tip the officers off that they were going to commit an armed robbery, the police notes give the impression that the officers had a suspicion and ran with it despite there not being clear evidence that such was the case.

These guys were busted for the guns, I'm not saying they're clean. Just that the UGAPD gets really bored and tries to make things interesting

Maybe they were just on the way to a really bizarre costume sex party?

Ran with what? All they did was notate the arrest report. happens all the time

Removing those from my car right now.

I think, after considering all of this a little more, it falls into the probable cause category. Just too many things suspicious about it to let it go.
