The duty to render assistance is a principle of international maritime law, and it is also federal law.

46 USC § 2304

quote:

(a)
(1) A master or individual in charge of a vessel shall render assistance to any individual found at sea in danger of being lost, so far as the master or individual in charge can do so without serious danger to the master’s or individual’s vessel or individuals on board.
(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to a vessel of war or a vessel owned by the United States Government appropriated only to a public service.
(b) A master or individual violating this section shall be fined not more than $1,000, imprisoned for not more than 2 years, or both.

I was just kidding

I think we read horror stories of opposing teams' fans and fight on sec rant all the time to find out many if not most of the opposing fans we meet in person are really great people.

I have taken and passed the USCG Masters 100Ton Captain's Class. So I do have knowledge on this subject. A vessel anchored or beached on an island is in not in danger of being lost at seas. From the OP's post it appears he was either beached or anchored the island and his starter didn't work. Yes, you should give assistance but that does not require you to give them a Tow. It is the Master/Captain of the Vessels call on whether the assistance would endanger his crew/vessel and he could legally refuse if he believes the attempted assistance is too dangerous. You are never required to give anyone a tow, under any circumstances.

The Maritime law has been amended to exclude LSU/Bama fans when assisting each other.

An LSU fan helping out a Bama fan and now Legend is giving us a morality lesson. Mindblown.

That's really wonderful. I was just providing the legal basis for the duty to render aid.

This reminds me that scene in Step Brothers. It can be hard sometimes to compliment another fan base.

I agree, I live in OB and have fished offshore many many times and helping someone out who's strandad is always the right thing to do and if you don't you could be in trouble. Most boaters don't know the rules of the road on the water and that's what causes a lot of the troubles.

My points were that by not towing someone in you would not get in any trouble. At minimum you must check on the stranded vessel, radio help, take them on your vessel if room, provide necessaries for their well being, etc. It really depends on the.severity of the situation. In your case it was not a May Day situation.

I highly recommend to anyone who regularly goes offshore or boating in general that they have on retainer a Sea Tow type service. It's fairly cheap and if you ever need it, it will save you thousands OB towing fees. To get towed in by a service 12 miles could cost you $2500+-

You were lucky they were willing and had a boat capable of towing you. Towing offshore can be tricky and dangerous
