Bringing order to a rivalry nearly gone awry, UT athletic director Dave Hart told the News Sentinel on Wednesday that Tennessee and Memphis have “agreed in principle to a four-year home-and-home series in men’s basketball.”

While discussions related to the universities meeting in football are ongoing, the basketball conversation has reached closure.

“We’re going to play,” Hart said. “We’re going to continue the basketball series.”

When the Vols and Tigers met on Jan. 4 at Thompson-Boling Arena, the affair was billed as the last meeting between the two for the foreseeable future. An eight-year home-and-home series beginning in 2005-06 had come to an end.

Memphis won the day, 85-80, to narrow the all-time series 14-11.

Egg on the face of Pastner.

quote:

As he has been since he was a second-year coach in 2011, Memphis coach Josh Pastner outwardly objected to continuing the Tennessee series past this season. Prior to the January game he said, “We will not play Tennessee anymore as long as I’m the head coach and I’m doing my scheduling.”

Asked Wednesday about the potential of a new four-year home-and-home with the UT, Pastner, who received an extension for an undisclosed amount of years on a contract signed through 2015-16, said, “Whatever my athletic director says is what I roll with. We’re locked arm-in-arm on this one.”

Have fun playing football at the liberty bowl, might be the only time Tennessee plays in a "bowl" for the foreseeable future...

It's good for the State of Tennessee. Reuniting the East with the West for the good of all man.

(Everyone knows that East Tennessee and West Tennessee are like two different countries that speak different languages, right?)

My favorite reason of Pastner's for wanting to end the UT series is him saying that Mempis already has a rival in Luisville, so they don't need another one in UT. Because Memphis would be the only team in the history of sports to have two rivalry games

The real reason is that Pastner does not want other teams playing/beating Memphis and then stealing recruits out of that city, the ones they want anyway. This "policy" started with Cal.

The only way to play Memphis in basketball is to also play them in football, that is the AD's stance for other BCS OOC schools close enough to recruit Memphis with success.

Oh, I'm aware of the real reasons, I just like the one Pastner says in his press conferences.

One of the many reasons I quit cheering for Memphis when they got Calipari. The Memphis-Arkansas series was one of my favorites, and he ended it for the reasons you stated. Memphis is going to get the recruits they want from the Memphis area, there are very few that go elsewhere if truly targetd by the Tigers.

If memphis had a somewhat decent football venue, playing a neutral site game there everyone once in a while if you're Ark/OM/UT/etc would be pretty cool... those fanbases could make that trip easily, and memphis can be fun.

Memphis is saying that there is no deal in place yet and UT is saying that there is a 4 year home and home deal.

Man, sounds like the Golden situation where he said he would be a graduate transfer and UT said he flunked out.

Why can't UT be truthful in these matters?

It wasn't UT lying in the situation with Golden.

quote:

The release did not disclose why Golden is leaving, and the Georgia native's statement offered little insight. But a source told CBSSports.com that Golden's departure is related to "academic issues," and that it's unlikely Golden will be able to play elsewhere next season, despite what he said, because he must first graduate from Tennessee to create that opportunity. All indications, the source said, is that Golden will not graduate in time.

Ole Miss-UT have played more in Memphis than in Oxford. I believe Ole Miss, UT, and Miss. State have all used Liberty Bowl as the site of a home game before. It would also be great for recruiting for some SEC teams to play games in Memphis.
