even Crxxms and Ed Ogre couldn't pull off 0-12. You have to be really really fricking retarded to go winless.

Ehh, South Carolina wasn't that bad at stopping the pass...

In 2011, South Carolina finished 2nd in the SEC against the pass.
In 2010, South Carolina finished 10th in the SEC against the pass.
In 2009, South Carolina finished 2nd in the SEC against the pass.
In 2008, South Carolina finished 1st in the SEC against the pass.

2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.

I actually thought that 1999 season, Holtz did one of his best coaching jobs ever, and it really showed the next season.

No coach in the SEC has ever, in its history, stepped into a more screwed-up talentless situation that Holtz did when he took over from Fat Bradstard Scott.

By all means, don't be fooled by the look of the defenses that Auburn fielded under the Gene Chizik regime. There is, no doubt, some talent on that side of the ball. To this point they have just been soft, undisciplined, poorly prepared, and terribly coached. I expect there to be upgrades at every position outside of defensive end.

Yep, that was the party line passed out about Ted Roof when Van Gorder took over the helm around this time last year....

In 2007 (Nix's final yr as DC), South Carolina finished 1st in the SEC against the pass.

One name: Gene Chizik

His meddling on both sides of the ball...well, I won't even go there.

Roger that.

Passing teams absolutely blistered us 9 out of 10 times under EJ. I liked him, but I was not upset to see him go. Every time we faced Arkansas with him at the helm I just cringed and got sloppy drunk before the games.

If Brad Lawing had not been his DLine coach, I seriously doubt if EJ would have been as successful as he was while here.

Add the names Brick Haley and David Turner and this is exactly how I feel about his time at MSU...

He had a couple of really good, big-play defenses for us -- they were just never total packages. At least not like the ones we put together in 10 and 11...

Usm won conference USA the year before Johnson came with basically the same exact team

Southern Miss was 12-2 the year before Ellis Johnson was hired.

May be true but I look at most of this as coach speak. Those guys need confidence after last year. Saban does the same thing, tear down the team when needed or build them up when needed.

Meddling? he was the HC right. was he not allowed to have input on both sides of the ball? y'all act like he should have watched from his perch on high only and not said a word. I will admit he was incompetent but y'all he was your HC.

and EJ is preaching to the choir so y'all enjoy it until the first fugly loss.

Not surprising. We do have talent.

Also not surprising all the gumps discounting it coach speak.

Coach speak.

Is Auburn that loaded on defense this coming season?
I doubt it, but it is hard to know exactly why we have sucked so hard on defense the last few years. Lack of talent? Poor coaching? Poor preparation? Undisciplined? Weak? Combination of some or all of the above?

I mean, obviously we don't hire a new coach if we expect the same thing, but I'm not sure the difference can be as dramatic as it needs to be in just one year for anyone to get too excited.

sure, he is the HC he can do whatever he wants. But when you hire a cordinator that has a certain philosophy and the HC has him go against that, it's very counter productive

Yeah because it is so obvious Auburn has ten players that will be drafted off of this defense. You still whine like a little girl when someone doesn't go all in on the Auburn hype. If you didn't want different opinions and wanted everyone to agree then take this to the Auburn board.

I like EJ. He had great defenses. He was an awful HC, but a great Def Coor.

He'll do really well with the level of talent AU has. He's a decent recruiter, but not on the level that you might expect. He's good for 1 or 2 big recruits a year, but he only focuses on half a dozen in the first place. He did get Clowney, so that's saying something.

Has a Southern Miss poster come in yet and tossed in his 2 cents?

They always do

and it's gold.
