Release is a broad term. I haven't seen another issue where the kid signed the loi and wanted out a month or two after. Please provide the link if you can find it

I mentioned this on the Alabama board, but does it not seem that even with some success, Jimbo can't keep coaches or players in Tallahassee. They had a lot of de-commits in the last recruiting class and saw a lot of staff turnover this past winter.
I don't think that is really the case here. Thomas just wanted to make his mom happy and signed with a school he didn't want to in order to do so. Now he wants out. I don't really see where Jimbo could be at fault here. Sometimes kids just like other schools more.

Urban Meyer didn't allow a kid to transfer when he was at Florida. The kid ended up being all-SEC, if I remember correctly. I think he was a OG.
Alabama wouldn't let Grant Dickey leave for Texas A&M, after Fran left.

I cant think of it happening like that
Another reason FSU will release him is because of his HS. Ask Saban how tough it is to get back into Northwestern after you piss them off.

If you allow kids to breach the loi before even setting foot on campus, there is no need for an loi.
If he played for a year and wanted out, that's fine. Those releases are granted all the time. Like I said, there's a good chance he'll be at FSU come fall.

Mike Blakely was a similar case at UF a few years back.
Also, what's to stop Thomas from enrolling at FSU in June, then transferring immediately if they don't grant him his release? He would still only have to sit out one year, correct?

We don't normally succeed pulling kids from nw. Ice Thomas funnels kids into Miami

How is it the smart play? Some schools are ok with it given certain circumstances. There is no indication that FSU would grant the release. You sign a contract knowing what happens if there is a breach. That's the way it is. If he was determined to go elsewhere, he should have signed with USC.
It's the smart play because it will prevent MT and his family from going in front of every camera they can find to talk about how FSU is mistreating him. You and I know that they're just holding him to the contract that he signed but that's not how it will play with a lot of potential recruits and their parents.
Remember the Wisconsin bball player who made such a fuss last year because he was restricted in where he could transfer?

They still have to release him if he wants to be on scholarship
ETA: He could tell FSU to kick rocks and walkon somewhere for a year.

Hope FSU does not let him out, but he still tells them to frick off and transfers.

In Nick Saban's 2007 class, Jamar Taylor enrolled early, but transferred after spring practice. He was able to play that fall at South Florida.

As I said before. His mom wanted him at FSU and has been out of the country for a while. We'll see how this plays out, but there's no indication she wants him to go elsewhere.

This is what happened to Grant Dickey in 2003 for Alabama. When Mal Moore refused to release him, he walked on at Texas A&M for a year. He was then eligible for a scholarship again.

Ejuan Price at OSU is one example but was a little different since it was coming off the Tressel firing and scandal.

What I gather is any of these could still happen ..
-- FSU can release Thomas and still choose to enforce the one-year penalty.
-- FSU can release Thomas and not enforce any penalty. Then he could play right away.
-- FSU could not release him at all. Then he'd probably have to sit out two years.
That's as clear as I can be with it right now. Much of it has to do with how FSU handles it.

I understand. But, there is a deadline. And on that deadline he signed with FSU. He should have to honor that commitment for a full year and then transfer. Or NCAA should make it to where he has to take juco route. It gives these kids more time for their recruitment than other guys.

Actually there isnt, but that doesn't change the fact that he signed with FSU.
