This would apply more to football, but why does this happen so rarely?

I mean, the purpose of the polls is to rank teams from best to worst. If Team A is ranked #1 and Team B is ranked #24 but they take Team A to overtime and lose or lose on the final play of the game, shouldn't Team A drop or Team B rise?

I've never understood the prevailing trend that says that a loss means dropping in the polls.

You also have to see it from the teams that are on the rise. By moving them up they are being rewarded for victory and because 1 ranking can only belong to 1 team someone has to be removed and it makes the most sense to remove a team that lost and let them earn their way back up the rankings if at all possible.

Hell the most agitating thing is to see Team A ranked 1 spot behind Team B when Team A beat Team B earlier in the season.

this would happen with my formula here

I mean, Team A would still gain points for winning, but Team B wouldn't lose or gain points.

I take the OP's opinion to be that teams should be ranked best to worst. 24 should not beat top 5 team, why penalize when what is supposed to happen happens. Higher ranked teams are frequently underdogs to their weekend opponent. Record, or wins, are weighted higher than all other factors but computers have proven not to be any better at ranking teams. It is what it is.

didn't that happened last season to a pac 12 school? Maybe it was 2 years ago. I defintely remembering a team losing a game and going from 16 to 15.

Yup #17 UCLA lost to #8 Standford in Week 14 and went from 17th to 16th.....

I know what you mean. But at the same time the polls are supposed to rank teams based on the current week. And even though Team A lost to Team B earlier in the season if 7 weeks later Team A has beaten more mutual games and looked better doing it then I don't mind.

Yea, I still think it's weird. I guess if it's a close game one might be able to justify it.

LSU lost by 9

UCLA lost by 18

We are all winners in life. We all deserve a trophy or a ribbon of some sort. Polls should be abolished. So should the scoring system. We shouldn't keep score. Everyone is equal.

It happens. Back in the Top 20 days Michigan managed to stay in SI's T20 with a record of 2-3.
