27 in a season and 52 in his career.
No one has really come close. He also is tied with Billy Jackson of MSU for 2nd place on the season with 18.
The talk of Clowney winning the hiesman. How close does he need to get, if he broke the single season record then sure he'd be a shoe in but he really hasn't come close. Sacks are the glory stat for d-lineman, so where dies he need to get to be mentioned as one of the greats?

Clowney is one of the greats already. He is a beast.

He doesn't need to die for that to happen imo

He needs to be better than Glenn Dorsey.

Really, all you could come up with to add to the discussion was my lame typing while on my phone. GTFO with that shite.

It wont be Clowney. Hes a dynamic player but he disappears for long periods of time during some games. He isnt a max effort every single play guy.

While I immensely respect Derrick Thomas, the best career on a pro rata basis belongs to Terrell Suggs. That guy was an absolute beast.

No. I think the 27 in a season could be broken. In 02 when Pollack had 14 sacks, I think he was 2nd in the nation to Terrell Suggs who had something ridiculous like 20. I think you could see a Clowney/Suggs type freak play in some shitty conference and get 27 one year.
However, 52 won't be broken. That's 13 sacks a year for a career, which is conceivable, but if a player is THAT good, they won't stick around and play 4 years.

If he had a motor like Pollack had then how good could he be? That guy was a max effort player, he brought it every play and Hus stats back that up. Not the most physically gifted but his effort made the difference.

In his defense, somehow the sack didn't become official in college until 2000

The data was put together for players pre-2000 by going back and looking at the tape. It isn't quite as reliable as contemporaneous stat keeping, but for the most part, it is hard to quibble with the ex post facto data. It is much more difficult, though, because sometimes no film for certain games exists.

I got the data from this site. If it's wrong then my bad
It's not wrong. It's just not official. They were tabulated retroactively, which I think should count.
The biggest thing that pisses me off with CFB records is they now include bowl/CC games in season records, but don't retroactively count them for the previous record holders.

So which is it?

Yep, add in the bowl game to Barry Sanders' 1988 stats

He's been better than Glenn Dorsey since his junior year in high school.

I have found lately that a lot of Bama fans don't understand when things are mutually exclusive. I'm not sure why your fanbase has that issue. For further study, go see Trey's honeybadger thread from last week.
Let me help you. They both are correct. The number is likely correctly tallied, though no one went back to make sure the film reviewer did it correctly. It is not and will never be official because sack was not an official stat until 2000. So it is both.
Also, let me help you out:

Please read this. I'll expect a report tomorrow.

Everyone was making a huge deal about Kevin Smith coming close to breaking Sander's record a few years back. They like to overlook the fact that Kevin Smith had 14 games to break it, while Sanders did it in 11. Add in his bowl game, and Smith was 300 yards away still with 2 more games played.
Smith's year was incredible, but nobody can touch Sanders's year.
