There are a lot of questions to be asked about Sewell-Thomas Stadium or, in the dream world of some UA baseball supporters, a yet-to-be-named new facility. Nothing is easier than spending someone else's millions and, although Alabama does have healthy athletic department revenues, college sports is expensive and Bill Battle, Dr. Judy Bonner and their bosses on the UA Board of Trustees have to have good fiscal sense.

Still, perhaps Battle could take in an SEC road trip or sneak in a visit to South Carolina's $35 million gem of a stadium (although UA does not play there this year) and get an idea of the atmosphere Alabama faces on the road - and the hurdles its recruiters face when players come on official visits, fresh from visiting Columbia or Fayetteville or Starkville.

Hopefully, he will sit behind home plate at one of those places and see that the best seat in the house should actually have a view of the entire playing field. A ball hit into the right-field corner at Sewell-Thomas might as well be in Cambodia as far as the spectators can tell.

We need a new stadium desperately. And it has to be on the river; I'd like it adjacent to the amphitheater across AL-69/US 43 in that empty lot. There's plenty of room for the stadium and parking

That'd be badass, but I would think they would want the stadium to remain on campus.

I also dream about putting it on the Manderson Landing land. It wouldn't be wide enough for a field (without taking up Jack Warner Pkwy), but they could extend it over the river on a barge. I just think that would be cool

So that it's easier to access for students? That's the thing they want to boost, student attendance. The farther from campus the stadium is, the less students will go.

I don't think that's true. If you give students close parking places, more will show up. Very few take the effort to walk to baseball games

There is some major construction going on at the basball stadium, but I don't know what it's for. Maybe they are starting to remodel Sewell?

It's already at a great location now (distance wise) it's right next to Coleman, and I know most on campus students already walk there. Also Crimson Ride has 2 stops right next to Sewell, so even if you don't want to walk you still have a ride.

It's "Champions Plaza" construction, I believe

If you're talking about the lot I think, I read in the Tuscaloosa News a couple weeks ago that the city just approved a bid to build condos and shops there.

It is Champions' Plaza. If you pull up the pdf file in the linked article, it has a rendering of what it will look like.

Edit: I was thinking of another article I read today.

I'm not exactly sure where you talking about, but the only large-enough spaces have plans for hotels to be constructed on them. One is a Hilton hotel next to Timerson Square and the other is across the Black Warrior River in Northport.

I think he's talking about that open lot that's right down the hill from Temerson Square. I think it had a car dealership on it many years ago.

I think the city has plans for that area. There's a Tuscaloosa "city infrastructure" website I frequent that keeps up-to-date on new construction being planed. I believe some multi-use buildings are being planned along that area.

Here's what is planned for the corner of Greensboro and Jack Warner Parkway:

New stadium will actually just be a complete renovation of the Joe, whenever they do it.

Athletic department doesn't want a parking lot as the entrance to the athletics complex.

We should build an all-sports museum where the Joe currently stands. And the last "renovation" resulted merely in an additional section of bleacher seats

A mile down the road really is not that far. The city and University really seem to want to continue upgrading the river area, and I feel that this would be a very welcome addition. As others have mentioned, that area is already allotted for something else, but it would be pretty badass.

And not to mention the fact that a majority of students don't live on campus, like myself. I don't go unless I'm already on campus b/c I know I won't be able to find a place to park (at least in a remotely close space)

Problem with expanding the Joe is getting the board's approval who just shot down UAB's cry for a new football stadium. Going to be tough to get Whitt/The Board to approve a new baseball stadium for Bama when they won't let UAB have an on campus football stadium.
