-- Right-handed pitcher Ashe Russell, who is ranked as the No. 5 player in the country and the best player at his position, will visit officially this weekend. We would certainly place him on commitment watch either this weekend or in the very near future. Russell was initially supposed to visit the weekend of October 31 but has moved the visit up because he’s ready to make his decision. Russell now appears to be down to South Carolina and Texas A&M in his final two.

-- The other major visitor that USC will have on campus this weekend is 2016 catcher/outfielder Marc Coffers (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), who will be down for the entire weekend as well. He wants to check out some of the baseball scrimmages, see the campus and have the full tour. Coffers is ranked as the No. 216 player in the country by Perfect Game and the No. 28 catcher. Ole Miss, we’re told, is one of the chief teams recruiting him.

Baseball America rates our 2014 class 5th in the nation.

South Carolina baseball’s recruiting class has been ranked No. 5 in the nation as announced by Baseball America on Wednesday afternoon.

It is the second consecutive year the Gamecocks have brought in a Top 5 class, as last year’s group was ranked No. 3 in the country by Baseball America. This year’s class consists of 16 newcomers.

2016 standout pitcher, Sawyer Bridges, just decommited from clemson and opened it back up with SC in the think of it. He's rated the #2 player in SC for '16 and #127 player overall nationally for '16. He's really highly rated, but not so high that he'll get picked in the early MLB rounds, at this point in time for the projections.

He plays for Summerville with current '15 baseball commit Hopkins and '15 football commit Zac Bailey. He plays club ball with the EvoShield Canes, and we have 5 commits right now from that team.

Perfect Game rated our class 4th in the country (3rd in the SEC)

LINK

quote:

OVERVIEW: The Gamecocks lost talented Oklahoma prep righthanded pitcher Braden Webb to the Major League Baseball draft, but otherwise are in great shape when it comes to the current freshman class. The Gamecocks landed several instant impact type of players, beginning with lefthanded pitcher Alex Destino (53) and righthanded pitcher Brandon Murray (83), among others. South Carolina also is excited about the addition of catcher Hunter Taylor (169) and another righty in Clarke Schmidt (230). The Gamecocks are very excited about the potential of Murray, who is vying to occupy for club’s closer role in the spring. Murray is an impressive-looking 6-foot-4, 200-pounder, who has a huge arm, showing the potential to get up to 97-98 mph with his fastball in the past. Murray is extremely difficult to hit when he works down in the zone, inducing a lot of ground balls as a result. Meanwhile, Schmidt, another righty, could have a significant role for the Gamecocks in 2015. Schmidt has a chance to nail down a job in the starting rotation, and, too, has a nice arm, showing a nice velocity spike with his fastball earlier this past summer, getting up to 94 mph with his fastball, along with a curveball, slider and changeup. Taylor and outfielder Clark Scolamiero also are worth watching, with Taylor being a guy who could help the Gamecocks in a variety of ways moving forward.

South Carolina picked up its fifth commitment of the 2017 class when pitcher/infielder Carmen Mlodzinski (Hilton Head/Hilton Head) made his pledge on Wednesday night. Mlodzinksi, a right-hander, is the third pitcher to commit in the class.
Mlodzinski has primarily been an infielder until just recently when he began to pitch for his travel team, Chain Baseball, which is based in Savannah, Georgia. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder was recently up to 87 mph at a showcase tournament at Furman University.

Thanks for the info! The coaching staff is still pulling in fantastic talent. Hopefully it pays dividends with more visits to Omaha in the very near future....

Caleb Whitenton: 247 - Gainesville - (Gainesville, GA) - 1B/6-2/230

We have some amazing recruits coming in, #7 class according to Perfect Game.

From what I read. Nick is going to go Pro. His stock is so high right now he'll probably get drafted in the first 2 rounds. I'm not counting on him coming here.

A lot of the other guys are highly rated, but maybe won't be drafted at the level they think they can obtain with 3 years of development at SC, so we should get several of the other highly ranked pitchers. If Allen and Morris come to SC, we are in really good shape. Romanik may be drafted high enough that he goes, but we need depth at C, so hopefully it works out for everyone.

Not recruiting news, but just some fantastic stats that I have seen about the program these past few days:

@GamecockBasebll
This is South Carolina - #Gamecocks set total attendance record last year at 305,564, 2nd best in nation.

-- One player to keep an eye on is class of 2015 right-handed pitcher Jamison Mobbs (Stratford/Goose Creek) was committed to Clemson on scholarship but decided to reopen his recruitment. South Carolina is out of scholarship money for the 2015 class but there is a chance he comes as a walk-on and either tries to earn a scholarship or he may be promised one in the future. The coaches want to see him in camp this January, evaluate him and go from there.

2017 class but the Gamecocks are in the hunt for another national prospect. Infielder Garrett Blaylock (Asheville, N.C./TC Roberson) is ranked as the No. 54 player in the country by Perfect Game and he has offers from a who’s who of programs in the southeast. South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and North Carolina are some of the major programs who are after him. Blaylock currently plans to make a decision in late January and the feeling is that it will come down to the Gamecocks and Tar Heels, as it so often does.

quote:

South Carolina is looking for a left-handed pitcher to fill out the 2016 class. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Gamecocks ultimately took two left-handed arms and they’ve identified three to evaluate up close. There is a pitchers/catchers camp on January 10-11 and three players who the coaches want to evaluate are scheduled to come in.

Class of 2016 lefties Jonathan Jahn (Clarks Hill/Westside), Josh Gregory (Gaffney/Gaffney) and Jake Wright (Chester/Chester) are all set to be in Columbia to pitch in front of Jerry Meyers and the rest of the USC staff.

Gamecocks add a LHP to the 2016 Class in instate prospect Josh Gregory out of Gaffney.

quote:

“I feel like USC is a perfect fit,” Gregory said. “Their campus is top notch and also have one of the best baseball programs in the South. What made me commit was the coaching staff and the opportunity to play at one of the highest levels.”

Gregory had the opportunity to work with pitching coach Jerry Meyers at camp on Saturday, which was a part of the reason that he made his commitment so quickly.

“It's a blessing to be coached by a man of his experience,” Gregory said.
