Made the decision to pay off "momma an nems" mortgage...being the good son I am and they charged me $8 for a $52K check...They said it would be the same charge for $100.
What the hell is going on in Lousiana that Iberia Bank would have to charge such a high rate? Is your bank different?

If you've got a decent amount of money in the bank there shouldn't be any charge. My Wells Fargo PMA gives free cashiers checks. Haven't needed one for three or four years so it may have changed, but I doubt it.
I'd be taking a handful of those dum dum suckers for $8.

Bank of America doesn't charge for 3 a month if you meet certain criteria.

What's the point really of such an absurd charge?

Step 1: Charge an absurd amount for a cashier's check.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit

Banks have to make money. fee income for banks is really down since the banking crisis. A lot of banks these days have very very little fee income outside of overdraft charges.
Is the bank you use a small local community bank? If so they probably have to keep some of their fees and generally rely on people not leaving due to loyalty from long time customers.

okay that's a pretty big bank. yeah thats weird they would charge a fee on something like that. I guess some banks are just still doing it where they can.

I think Regions was about $5 when I did one. Same with First Tennessee.
And that's a nice thing to do to pay off their mortgage.

$6 at my bank
some people forget that a bank is a business, they provide a service in return for money.
Everybody thinks the bank should just give everything for free

They know you will pay it so why not charge a fee.

yea but banks forget that they need people to use their bank over other banks or they won't have any money to provide services. I always check on a banks fees and charges that apply to me when i'm choosing where to store money at. I don't use a bank if I look and see they charge a bunch of fees, high priced fees or there is a fee I don't understand.

You should have threatened to close your account. They probably would have waived the fee.

yeah, pretty much all banks charge fees here and there nowadays. There is always a way to get around them, like getting online statements or using your debit card x amount of times a month, etc
eta: but I'm not thrown off my an official check fee. It costs money to print those checks. If anybody would close out there account just for that I wouldn't want their business anyway

I think when they made changes to overdraft charges and credit card fees, banks were forced to find other sources of fees and these services that were once less expensive or free with a balance became fair game. Sort of like baggage on airplanes.
