What kind of offer would it take to get Ben Howland?

Anyone know what he was making at UCLA?

$2.04M

At least as far as I can see. Another site said $2M on a Top 10 list of highest paid coaches, but Calipari had 0 titles on the list, so it was at least a year old.

ETA: And actually that link seems to be old too. But it seems to have been ~$2M.

Yeah and why would we spend that much money? How about we hire a guy and make him earn his pay

Howland is a PROVEN head coach. He may get fired because he didn't meet the expectations of a school with a billion national titles. And I'm not saying it wouldn't be justified because he had ridiculous talent at UCLA just about every year.

But we're talking about Auburn here. Howland is a very good coach and gets his teams to the tournament nearly every year. If Jacobs had any sense, he'd call Howland's agent as soon as Howland were let go and see what it would take to get him. Probably a pipe dream, but Howland would be hands down the best coach in Auburn's basketball history.

I mean if AU is gonna spend 92 m on a new arena, why not go big on a proven coach?

I think he's going to go somewhere that doesn't have a head coach.

I don't care if it takes 10 million, his hire would definitely turn Auburn around and we wouldn't have to worry about him being hired away.

Jamie Dixon or Shaka to UCLA and Howland goes back to Pitt.

They finished around 10 million under budget. They did this by skipping a lot of the locker room and training facilities plans.

Like I said in another thread, it would take multiple miracles and a head injury or two to get Ben freaking Howland to come here.

We'd have a better chance at getting Bobby Valentine to coach baseball.

For the record, there is nothing worse than watching the NCAA tourney and your team can't even make the NIT.

If Jay Jacobs somehow gets Howland, I will be very, very happy. I feel if we had Malzahn and Howland that two of the three big sports would improve massively and people would stop the Jacobs hate.

Yep. That hire would definitely save Jacob's arse as long as Malzahn pans out, and I'm confident he will.

Howland and Barbee aren't even in the same building as coaches.

If Barbee is "proven", then think of another word for Howland. Dude has led his teams to three Final Fours, four conference tournament titles and seven conference regular season titles.

He got fired (or is going to get fired) from UCLA because three Final Fours in 10 seasons wasn't good enough. If he went to one Final Four, heck, maybe even an Elite Eight at Auburn...he'd have a lifetime contract.
