Anything is possible but that would be "change" that is not really change. It would also alienate over 100 Universities that are counted on for many sports. Most importantly basketball and the NCAA tournament.

seems like a double edged sword if the NCAA goes by the wayside. what happens when a lawsuit comes to the court regarding the rules for student athletes (or some other sports related issue)? do the new conferences collude to have consistent rules?

After realignment settles and there are likely 4 16 team conferences then yes, they could leave the NCAA and do their own thing. Probably wont happen in my opinion though
