WOW! Swope's official time is 4.34. Tied for 2nd among WRs with Austin, only behind Goodwin.

So in other words, a guy who "lacks great top end speed" is only just behind an Olympic track athlete and tied with one of the fastest college wide receivers?

The whole NFL evaluation/combine/draft process is ridiculous.

you understand there is a difference between track speed and football speed, right? I mean on film, I can see where they say that. When Ryan is in a pure footrace no one ever caught him that I remember, but route running he didn't create that type of huge separation that you would expect from a kid that runs that sort of forty time.

I think elusiveness gets subconsciously combined with raw speed as well. People think JFF is the fastest guy on the team (he's not by a long shot) but his ability to change direction at full sprint makes his gamespeed simply god-like. While I don't think anyone thinks Swope is slow, he doesn't burst out of his cuts and create immediate separation which masks how fast he really is straightline. I think a guy like Kyrion Parker is going to look crazy fast for the opposite reason though I doubt he runs a forty even in the 4.5 range.

btw, it's unfortunate but our coaching staff knew Demontre wouldn't have a good combine. This was why they were trying to get him to come back so that he can focus on it. Kid has great film though so hopefully it won't hurt his stock too much. But I heard our coaches were a little pissed at the McShay's and Kiper's of the world who were rating him in the top 5 picks. They feared that once he tested, he'd fall to bottom of first round but the projections can't take that into account.
