Was Holtz and Arkansas on the cover of SI as being #1 in '77?
Not in the AP poll, although Arkansas was pre-season #2 in 1978.

Yeah well Auburn was #1 in 2011 and I'm sure there are plenty of other inconsistencies in the OP.
No we weren't. Unless you're counting the final 2010 polls as 2011 since technically they were released in 2011.

Damn. Does that make us part of the Big 6?
No. It's not a hard concept to grasp. Why do people have trouble with it?

I swear sometimes I feel like I gotta explain things more to some of our southern brethren than I do my wife.

I'm pretty sure you have to win a national title in the last 40 years to be a member of the Big 6.
Alabama
LSU
Florida
Georgia
Auburn
Tennessee
Honestly man, considering the strength of the conference over the last, say, 15 years, any other team that can get to ATL, then win, is a huge step up and a major accomplishment. I still think winning ATL is the toughest assignment in CFB right now.
===========================
Just look at most recent season. UA/UGA was a classic. UA/ND....

I think you need to hold onto to that ranking for more than 20 minutes to even consider yourself a part of that echelon.

Learning here. Baby steps. I'll take .500 in SEC first then worry about what comes after that when we get there.

This list is wrong. It shows MU's highest ranking at any time vs. other schools final ranking.
Yeah but it shows a sadness from MU that we can all feed on.

There ya go. Hell, Franklin is getting Vandy to a point where a trip for them wouldn't be shocking. Spurrier actually got SCar there once and may do so again.

It was definitely eye opening this year. The good thing as I see it is that the fanbase, boosters, AD all seem to agree on one thing.....seasons like last year aren't acceptable. The 80's and 90's were just a black hole as far as football goes at Mizzou. All of the apathy from those years is gone so hopefully we'll see strides towards improving.

Appreciate y'all blowing it that year.
It helped immensely in our quest to finish the year #1.
But sorry...
Your Big Six application is
DENIED.

Yeah...not rubbing it in man but Coach Pinkell's preseason statements of 'we really don't need to change things' was pretty much universally met in SEC land with "Seriously?".

That's probably the biggest thing. The huge upside is games against UF, UGA LSU, UA, etc., means a lot of national TV time...recruits really like national air time.

Big 6 members have won multiple SEC championships since '92 expansion while nobody outside Big 6 has even won 1.
It's better than that.
Starting in 1963, only the Big Six teams have won the league title. And since 1963, only the Big Six teams have won the national title. I'd like to say in the BCS Era, but Georgia blew their best shot at completing the Big Six BCS Era of Dominance by barely losing to Bama in the best game of the entire season IMHO.
Point being, the Big Six predates the '92 expansion.
Here's the proof:

3 of the last 5 SEC championship games may as well have been the BCSNCG
2008 (#1 vs #2) 2009 (#1 vs #2) 2012 (#2 vs #3)
2010,2011 not so much.
