But is Saban twice the coach that Rich Rodriguez is?

By going out and buying Saban, Alabama has put more than chips on the table. The university has bet its football future and reputation on a guy who provides no reason to believe that he will build a career in Tuscaloosa.

Looking through some old articles tsk tsking Alabama for hiring Nick. This was by far my favorite

Ivan Maisel January 3rd 2007

quote:

The way to success in the SEC, as Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida have illustrated, is to hire coaches on their way up who will build programs that last. That Moore chose to spend the money to hire Saban shows how desperate the university is. It's an all-or-nothing bet, and the early line is pick 'em.

I remember when Saban was first hired. I was watching a recruiting show on ESPN and Tom L. said without a doubt Alabama will be running college football in a couple years. I'v liked the man ever since.

It's easy to look back at this so many years ago and think Maisel was off-based, but in all fairness... he had a point back then. Saban hadn't ever seemed like the type that would stay for an indefinite amount of time. Also, we WERE desperate to land a big coach. The only angle I never understood was how SO MANY PEOPLE kept saying Bama is nothing without buying a "hired gun." EVERY COACH is a hired gun... you don't go out to find the shittiest coach so you can give him the least amount of money. It's an investment.
