All I know is that many of my friends' kids go to FSU because they can't get into UF. It's really tough these days.

Older Gators often talk about not being able to go there if they were applying today.

Yeah, there are more engineering grads, skewing the salaries. Hence why starting salary isn't enough to just declare Auburn better than selective research powerhouses like Florida and TAMU

And our average test scores come in a range: 28-32 for ACT and 1890-2090 for the SAT, which is highest in the SEC behind Vanderbilt.

That's very true. We take so many out of staters and foreigners because they pay an inflated rate I'm afraid.

This is inaccurate. Historically Georgia Tech has been the designated school for engineering, although that has changed recently. Both Georgia and Georgia Tech are Research I institutions.

Yeah, I think we are getting into different criteria for these rankings.

Earnings and earnings potential (AU shines due to engineering, along with A&M and Vandy)

Research programs - A&M and UF especially

Endowments - A&M head and shoulders over all. Vandy and UF.

Etc.

Lot of different ways to rank academics.

Also, out of curiosity, how are the honors programs at these other schools? I know about Florida's, but an curious about their SEC companions.

Alligators are ornery because of an enlargement of the abdulla oblongata. Its the sector of the brain which controls anger.

Lol Auburn ahead of Florida because of mid-career starting salaries? Shouldn't you consider the proportion of student graduating with degrees that make a lot of money? That is a very skewed methodology. Auburn is not as good as Florida. Florida is more selective and has the better ranked graduate programs. Florida is no Vanderbilt, but according to undergraduate admissions selectivity and graduate research rankings, behind Vanderbilt, Florida and aTm are the best schools, with Florida having a slight edge in undergraduate selectivity.. And no, UGA doesn't just get AAU membership because their medical school is "up and running at full speed.". They need to have meaningful research going on, along with many other factors. Oh and UAB's medical program is unranked, so saying that it has a better medical school than UF, which is ranked higher than university of Miami, and has more research dollars than any med school in the south east, and just built two new medical centers with more coming, is just funny. Sorry, but when other conferences laugh at the SEC academics, Florida and aTm are largely not include.

2012 National Institutes of Health funding rankings (I included medical schools in the Southeast ranked in the top 50):

10 DUKE UNIVERSITY $295,458,021
13 VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY $286,689,880
14 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA CHAPEL HILL $253,776,220
16 EMORY UNIVERSITY $223,899,649
29 UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM $143,263,811
38 UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE $117,552,086
40 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA CHARLOTTESVILLE $107,511,242
45 WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES $91,866,698
48 UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA $83,937,366
49 MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA $83,851,149

2013 U.S. News medical school rankings:

Top primary care medical schools

You might out to do a little more research before making definitive statements.

Hey I know you are new here but this is kind of ridiculous. UF is recognized as a very good school. That should be enough.

I would just let this thread die. It's not leading to anything good. This place is a flame fest for sports if you add academics into the mix it's just gasoline on the fire.

Uh not total funding comes from NIH, lol... And in total research money, UF and Miami have the most, hence why their medical schools are actually highly ranked by US news.

Who cares. Go to any SEC school get a useful degree and get a job. They can all do that for you. The end.

A&M is getting tougher all the time for a variety of reasons. It starts with the population explosion in Texas going from about 17 million in 1990 to about 27 million and growing fast (over 1k people a week) now. They eliminated any legacy admissions.

The Top 10% rule (guaranteeing admission to the Top 10% of HS grads in Texas) has become a huge problem because the disparity in the HS's is so great. It puts a kid from a garbage HS in the Top 10% as an auto admit but a kid from a top notch suburban HS in the Top 25% of his class and a high SAT can be unable to get in. In Austin there is a HS that you has more National Merit Finalists than Top 10% grads for example. It's a big reason why more and more Texas kids are going OOS for college because there is a big drop from A&M/Texas to the other public schools in Texas academically.

Among public universities, UF is #17. Auburn is in the 30's. UF is also an AAU school.

TOTAL research by university

UAB even leads Florida in total research funding with almost all of UAB's funding coming from the medical school. Florida is still ranked highly though. Listen, Florida is a better school by basically every measure than Alabama/UAB but you simply aren't in the medical school area. Emory and UAB look up to no one but Duke in the Southeast when it comes to the medical schools. UAB has a legitimately elite medical school.

Ranking the SEC schools academically? (Posted on 1/3/13 at 2:27 a.m.) While CFB is coming to a close, I guess this would be an entertaining discussion. My opinion, and according to US news college rankings Vandy > Florida > TAMU > Georgia > every other school

BUTTHURT POST OF THE NEW YEAR! I wonder if Louisville is ranked higher than UF in this too?
