Alright i'm looking for a little advice from everyone on here.

So i've got two opportunities in front of me. I can either take a promotion with my current company or turn it down in order to fufill my dream of travelling the world. This promotion means that I would be involved in all aspects of the business and have the ability to fix everything I think isn't working currently. My dream means that I would make about what I make now but living in 3rd world countries being a traveler.

Any insight from everyone out there. It's really a big decision in my life and I'm completely torn as i'd like to see this company succeed and it would also make me a ton of money if it did.

That is a tough one. Are these both once-in-a-lifetime opportunities? Would you have time to take vacations if you took the promotion, or would you make enough to eventually retire early? If you travel, would you spend most of your time working, or would you have enough free time to really enjoy your travels? Could taking the travel job lead to a vertical move in the future?

I don't know enough about you or the situation to make a recommendation. If it were me, I would take the promotion, but I am also at the point where I am ready to settle down. I am getting married next year and my fiancee is tied down because of her school, so there's no way I could take a travel job.

hmmm.... I was offered a position a few years ago that I was seriously considering. I rarely even consider offers so that should tell you how tempting it was.

This sounds dumb, but for me it helps to write it down so it is in front of you. Make a pro/con list for each. That REALLY helped me. There are SO many personal factors that come into play with yours. Do you live well alone (that is VERY alone)? Do you travel well alone? Are you co-dependent on family and current friends?

If I did not have kids, I know that I would travel the world. Hands down and not even give it a second thought. That experience will be a phenomenal resume builder for when you return plus the experience. Travel is very important to me, though. I have lived alone and away from family for many years, though. Plus, I have no issues being in another country alone.

Make a pro/con list. It might help you.

oh, and I'm oh so jealous! lol

A few things to consider:
1). Unless you own the business it is unlikely you will be able to "fix" everything. But if you are high enough you can certainly have an impact.

2). Would you be able to travel safely? Would you be going to some hot spots where an American is an obvious target?

3). How does each job position you the next few steps down the road professionally? Or, which one positions you better in your field? Does that even matter for your goals?

4). How does each opportunity impact your family and your obligations to your family, if any?

5). Do you see yourself witha wife in kids in the future? If o, which opportunity is better for them?

I guess I have more questions than anything. Sounds like an exciting time. Enjoy the process.

Everything slc posted is spot on.

If it was me I would stay with #1.

thanks for the thoughts and opinions everyone. I've taken a day to mull it over and really think through everything.

I'm still not 100% but I think i'm going to take the promotion. It will spell out a little more commitment than I originally planned but I think I can make the company successful. I've yet to actually fail at anything except the occaisional bar rejection so I figure I should find something way out of my comfort zone and at least have failure as an option for once. The company in question gave me my break and has provided a lot of perks that make my life fun. plus it means I can live in fayetteville for longer and I do love it up here. Hopefully I take over the company succeeds and I become sunhog rich. If not I just hope sunhog will hook me up with a job.

SLC I appreciate the things you've outlined. I kind of took a self inventory with them and it really helped my decision along.

Taking the promotion is a good call. Like I told you, if I were in your shoes I'd want to bank back a nice chunk of change before traversing the planet to freelance. Call it "oh shite" money if you will, be it to buy your way out of a Turkish prison, fly back from Australia for an emergency, Get a new passport when going through the middle east as Canadian, or to weather the times when a client is slow on paying.

Keep living cheap, keep your commitments low, and stack cash so you can do what you want without worries.

For what degree?

Depends on the degree, Tech or UofO (if you can afford it) might be better alternatives in the area depending on the degree.

don't forget that little place on the east end of Garrison when you want to spice it up a bit.

Go for it, know several friends who did the business school there as well as engineering.

I wonder if those LSU band members went there during their trip up here?

They use to have kareokee (sp?) in there on Thursday nights, I think?, not sure, but I had a friend who would go in there on that night because he liked to sing, but also because he could drink all night for free. He's married with a kid now, so his story turned out to be legit, although I doubted him at the time.

Huh? You go to college for a coaching degree?

That profession seems to be all about your personal network, who you played with, who you started with, where everyone else around you goes and everyone kinda goes up together about the same timeframe.

Which sport are you most interested in? I'd still advise growing to about 6'8" and playing D1 ball and preferably being at least all-conference caliber. Getting drafted and spending a couple years on a scout team or the minor leagues is also a good thing to do.

If you're a Joe Blow wanting to get in the profession, you'll need to get a teaching certificate and aim for the HS level, or be willing to do it for free at a small, small D2 or Juco level for awhile until the guy that gave you a shot gets a bigger job.

Coaching.

Everyone I went to school with who went into coaching went to Tech who didn't play or UofO who played.

FWIW.

UofO was because they are a NAIA school, no scholarships, but if you play they find you scholarships *wink, wink*. I had several opportunities for basketball and baseball for schools like these, but they were expensive. Basically they have tryouts, but you had to be "invited" to the tryouts.
