Sad realization I've come to

I've come to the sad realization that whether it's Grant, Gottfried, or whoever our coach may be, our basketball program will never be anything but average. We do the same shite every year no matter who is our coach. I don't want to believe it, but I don't think we'll ever be anything more than average. This isn't a one game over reaction. It's just me separating myself from the extreme love and fandom I have for Bama and seeing us for what we are. It's really crushing and deflating to feel like this.

Bama has a great assortment of players this year, yet will still will consistently barf up bad games.
The one good thing about basketball, as long as you're playing hot in February /March, it won't matter much what happens in November /December.
only if you tank it late in the season do you look to hang your NCAA resume on some early season wins.

Having at least 1 really great shooter would make a huge difference IMO. Would've made a huge difference last year too. Hard to beat good teams when you don't have anyone that's just a great natural shooter.

Like I said guys, this isn't just related to this season or this team. It's taking a look at the whole history of our program. Even our best Wimp teams couldn't get over the hump. Our program is equivalent to Mississippi State football. We just can't do whatever is necessary to take that leap for whatever reason.

We have a couple of those this year, but everyone has off-nights. Post-play and a lack of an offense is what's killing us. Grant HAS to hire a coach to run the offense. I thought he would open up the offense once we loosened up the zones, but that clearly isn't happening. I still believe Grant has us going in the right direction, he just needs some help. I thought we would lose this one, but I also thought we would win at Cincy and VCU, and with Gueye and Engstrom both possibly done, this might be a very rough year.

Depends on your definition of "hump". I believe they were a very successful program under Wimp, being mentioned for National Titles possibilities was not uncommon. Tournament basketball is cruel(except for the truly elite, Duke etc), one bad call or missed shot can ruin a great season. I think I remember Bama being top three or so with players in NBA, also was top three or so in consecutive sweet 16 appearances at the time.
I only dream of having those types of teams now.

More like Georgia football minus the 1980 title. Or maybe Clemson football minus the 1981 title.

We have a couple guys who will get hot from 3 every few games, but we don't have anyone who can consistently knock down a mid-range jump shot. Makes us a much easier team to defend.
As for the state/future of the program...

I mean get over the hump as in elite 8s and final 4s. As good as Wimp was, his teams couldn't do it. I know tournament basketball is fickle, but even he couldn't get us to the promise land. It just sucks. I love basketball more than football, but I've never lost all hope in ever being a great program until now. In the back of my mind, I hope one day we'll be a Florida or Ohio State type program.

Our defensive and offensive philosophies don't mesh at all. If you are going to be a pressing team you also need to be a running team on offense. If you are going to be a half court oriented offense you need to slow the game down on both sides and make the other team play that way too. Right now we are playing the high risk/high reward game on D, but staying extremely conservative on O. Now with Gueye and Carl possibly out for the year, we won't be able to survive playing slow.

Well back to your OP..... I think Bama has the ability to be a contending program again. I also think it will more difficult for them now than in earlier eras.
CBB, like CFB is all about coaching imo. Get the great coach and hold on to him, the program succeed. I'm talking about top 12 type teams yearly type of stuff, not Duke, UNC level. If Bama can field top 12 type teams each year, they tourney deep runs will happen.

Concerning this year's team, besides the "coaching issues" and now injury problems, Bama needs a leader(s) on the court. I thought that guy would be Steele but....

I teeter the line between sadness and meltdown when we lose games like this. Way too invested into it but oh well.
