Chizik -- The weirdest coaching career in CFB history?

Not a flame. I promise. But I have been questioning Chizik from day one and he continues to surprise me.
1. Was hired after a two-year stint at Iowa State. This was perhaps the most questionable hire ever cause he went 3-9 his first season and then 2-10 his second. No improvement there. Many Auburn fans were disappointed.
2. Took a 5-7 (but very talented Auburn team) to a decent bowl game and 8-5 season his first year. Nothing out of the norm here.
3. Boom! Here comes 2010! Cam Newton and Nick Fairley lead the way to a 14-0 record with a BCS crystal ball. Yes, these players were good, but coaching has to factor in a little bit with a team that good, right? Not only that, but perhaps the strangest Iron Bowl occurred that year too. Auburn came back from a 24-0 deficit to beat Alabama in THEIR home stadium. Let's not forget that Saban is still the head coach of this football team with a bunch of returning starters from last year's national title.
4. 3rd season goes as planned with an 8-5 rebuilding year. Many were expecting a season just like that.
5. 4th season is just atrocious for the tigers. They will most likely go winless in the SEC and have an overall record of 3-9. But it's not like they don't have the talent to do better. Auburn's recruiting staff always does well in competing with Bama for the top players in the nation. Yet with all that talent on the football team, you can still only manage just three wins? We know you can do better than that because you came close to beating LSU.
So that's Gene Chizik. The man who put together a national championship-winning team in two years and then lost it in another two. Am I seriously the only one scratching my head at how this is even possible? Either way, I hope Auburn makes a good hire so they can be competitive again. Here's to the future, War Eagle

The smock did him in, IMO. All else could be forgiven, but not that. Never that.

Whatever the problem, I think it was exacerbated this season by the NCAA snooping around. Coaching staff started turning on each other.

The fact that Auburn hired him to begin with is a mystery, considering Auburn was targeting someone the caliber of Bobby Petrino back in 2003. I don't even remember who the other candidates were, but Chiz must have had one hell of an interview.

The 2010 team was dominated by Seniors who were Tubby's guys and had already been thru seeing him fired. They were a tough group.

He may keep his job anyway. Spin it however you want, he has a BCS title and this is the first "bad" season he has had.

He MAY keep his job and be forced to change a lot of staff. His 1st 3 years he won at least 8 games. FOUR MORE YEARS!

Agree completely. I have to say, though, the irony of an LSU fan talking about an inexplicable coach is cracking me up.

I remember heading over and reading the Bunker headlines the day Chizik was hired.
It was the meltiest Meltdown I ever did read.

It is kinda weird he went from a national championship team to being a huge loser so quickly.

quote:Not really. That entire season and team all fed off of Cam Newton. He was one of those special players that comes around every now and then.

It just so happens he came on the scene immediately following one Tim Tebow (who was the same way).
The ironic thing is now Cam Newton plays 2nd fiddle to Steve Smith at Carolina, and Smith is "that guy" for the Panthers.

When you rely on Trooper Taylor to buy your recruits, you are bound to get players of questionable work ethic and no real ability to hold their feet to the fire and get them working harder.
Like a boss trying to get his employee to work harder when the employee has already caught him sleeping with Joyce from accounting in the VP's office.

I would give a lot of credit to Gus Malzahn.
