I had a conversation with my Grandaddy this afternoon. He went to aTm back in the late 1930's and he was telling me about how everyone would hitchhike everywhere. Is this common knowledge?
IS that where the gig'em came from?

Hitchhiking was fairly common nation wide till late 70's or so till people's faces started popping up on milk cartons.

A lot of college kids hitchhiked back then since everyone didn't have cars. I am pretty sure there still is a board in the student center for students that are looking other students willing to give them rides back home.
Gig'em came from how you hold a frog gig.

The hitchhiking thing is common knowledge among Ags. The CTs would line up at the gate to campus on Fridays. A car would pull up and tell first cadet where they were headed. That cadet would relay the destination down the line and those students headed that way would pile in. Pretty efficient. Most Aggies back in the day were poor farm boys who couldn't afford cars, so hitching a rid was the only option. The practice ended by the 70s.
As mentioned above, Gig 'Em came from gigging frogs. That was brainstormed before a game against TCU back in the 20s or 30s (not gonna look it up now). Before long, all SWC schools had their own hand sign.

I was a fish camp counselor and everything and I have never heard that hitchhiking is a thing at A&M.

Thanks! Randomly stumbled on the Cushing Library data base on photo.tamu.edu. Some pretty sweet pictures in there ranging from student life to football, etc.

As others have mentioned, hitchhiking was much more common back in the early days of the automobile. I guess Aggies did this a little bit longer, and a little bit more successfully, than the average hitchiker because of the uniform--as people became more wary of picking up hitchikers, your chances of hitching a ride increased if you were wearing a uniform, for obvious reasons.
