In retrospect what was the point of Ray Goff's hire?

Looking at all the coaches that are getting fired like Dooley, Chizik, and Joker.. made me think of Ray Goff. He never had a head coach position or even a coordinator position. I mean even Derek Dooley worked under Saban and had a head coach position.. so at least his hiring makes some sense. Here is Ray Goff who never had any of that. We kept him for 7 years with records similar to Derek Dooley. I really think he made us irrelevant for a long time while Steve Spurrier was killing it at Florida. My question is what was the reasoning for hiring someone with no headcoach/coordinator experience for so long?

Dooley didn't want anybody that would outshine his record at Ga. Thus he kept Goff.

He did have coaching experience, he was on our staff for about 6 or 7 years and was a UGA guy through and through. I'm way too young to remember many of the details around the hire (like I don't know who else was considered). Also, and again my time might be off, Jan Kemp's shenanigans were going on so we wanted someone who we knew would do things by the book. Goff kinda fit and so he was hired.

As for why he lasted so long, well...times were different then. You still had coaches at their schools for 20 years, it wasn't the WIN AND WIN NOW mentality of today. Keep in mind in his 3rd and 4th years we were pretty damn good, and in 92 I think we lost our 2 games by a total of 4 points. Eventually the writing was on the wall and he had to be let go.

Goff was a UGA boy who played QB here just like Bobo. As it turned out Bobo is a pretty good offensive coach while Goff was pretty good at making chicken.

Goff was a fantastic recruiter and a decent assistant coach. The money boys like him too.

Knapp recalls the Goff hire.

quote:

We almost had a coach and then that popped out with Dick Sheridan from North Carolina State, and it got leaked prematurely to the papers before he had a chance to tell his team, and he had to pull out.

Now, why we went with the RB Coach and not Erk or Haffner, I have no clue. Here's Goff's thoughts on the matter.

Pretty interesting. I didn't know much about the Jan Kemp days. Thanks for clearing it up.

Also thanks for the link.

this one is easy..V Dooley was one of the worst ADs in college football history. He was literally a "no show" AD the last 5-7 yrs of his term. almost all of his hires were disasters. This is one of the few things adams got right.

Don't know how true this is because I was too young when Goff was hired to know what was going on. But I have always heard Erk was supposed to take over when CVD left. That's why he went to GSU to get HC experience. But the president at the time was mad because Erk left UGA so he wouldn't hire him.

I always had heard they hired him because Dooley had made a deal that none of the assistant coaches would be fired after he retired. Since Goff was one of those assistants and a Dawg, the choice was easy.

Ray Goff is a nice guy.

My dad was a staff physician at UGA in 1976.

He went to the University gym to play basketball one day on his lunch hour, but a bunch of black kids wouldn't let him play. Ray Goff came in and ran the kids off, and my dad and Ray Goff played basketball together. They had the whole court to themselves.

alright guys...first of all, Goff was an assistant at South Carolina and was the 3rd or 4th choice behind Dick Sheridan et al...Erk was supposed to take over from VD when VD was gonna run for the senate in the mid-late 80's, then Dooley renigged and Erk got mad, saw the handwriting on the wall and bailed for GSU as it was obvious Dooley was never gonna let Erk replace him...

Except he was already our recruiting coordinator and RBs coach when he was hired.

from Wikipedia

"Goff served as an assistant coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks before returning to Georgia as an assistant in 1981. While an assistant at Georgia from 1981 to 1988, he held the positions of recruiting coordinator, tight ends coach and running backs coach, and earned a reputation as an excellent recruiter. When Dooley, the winningest coach in Georgia history, retired after the 1988 season, Goff — then a 33-year-old running backs coach — was the surprise choice to succeed him."

From my memory hump pretty much has it correct. The politicians were all over Dooley's nut sack. Dooley all but said he was going to run. Erk thought he was going to get the job, then the polling numbers came out and Dooley discovered he wouldn't win by acclaimation. Erk left. Later when Dooley decided to retire, Sheridan was offered the job, but changed his mind. This, along with the Mason incident, is the origin of GA's institutional fear that it can't hire a tier one coach. The Kemp mess didn't help.

Many of you don't remember the Dooley led revolt against the NCAA. For years I think the NCAA had it out for GA because of Dooley's stand on revenue sharing.

All in all the mid to late 80's and 90's were a mess. Many say a Dooley created mess. Who knows. There is plenty of blame to spread around. Personally, I think the admins should have shoved Dooley out the door when he started flirting with politics. I don't think his heart was in it after that period.

Goff was a popular player, but many old dog fans preferred Robinson, a vastly misused QB talent.

So he was with UGA from 81-88 when he was hired as the head coach in 89.

This. Goff recruited some offensive studs. Funny how many mistakes the "money boys" make over the years. Makes you wonder how they keep their money.

Georgia was running the veer.

Robinson was a pro style qb and did make it as a backup in the NFL.
