I'm not saying people should be paid exactly what they bring in to the university. I'm saying they should be paid what they are worth. Manziel is worth far more than he is paid.

The family will own the trademark and, if you look at the article reference, A&M will license it. If the Aggies jumped the family they will get sued....no way A&M can own it after he leaves school.

South Park's slavery spoof on EA and the NCAA was pretty close. I bet Ed O'Bannon is chomping at the bit to use whatever happens in his lawsuit. I hate Ed O'Bannon for being a bitch, but I do agree with his POV, it's too bad it's not a benevolent one with him, he's trying to get paid.

The whole point in trademarking it is not to profit from it...but to keep someone else from doing so.
There's no end to the number of shitheads who will try this in Texas, sell one shirt, then report it to the Dallas Morning News to get Manziel rendered ineligible and A&M in trouble with the NCAA again.
Do not underestimate the pettiness and spite possessed by sips, raiders, bears, and everyone else in Texas who hates the Aggies.

It was a reactionary move. They've issued cease and desist for people making Johnny Football t shirts. I wouldn't want some random faceless entity making money off my child without my permission.

CGSC is correct.. Doing this saves the family.. Allows us to print some new jerseys that EVERYONE wants. Seems like a win win.
Most important part though. Jason Cook is our Mississippi State Bulldog Marketing Guy... Dude has been one of the best things to ever happen to our marketing in my opinion.

Exactly. I don't get why this is difficult to understand.
Right now, he can't make money off of his own nickname because of NCAA regs, so he and his family are supposed to just sit back while every two bit parking lot entrepreneur in Texas cranks out shirts with "Johnny Football" on them? They're trying to stop other people from profiting off of their son and they're going through licensing experts at the University in order to do that - I didn't realize that was so bad.
Neither the family nor the University are going to make money off of the Johnny Football name right now, but they have an interest in protecting it both now and for the future.
Sure, the University will sell #2 jerseys, all universities with a big-name player do that.
