BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Beating New Mexico State was nice, especially for the players that have suffered through this horror show of a football season, but the only game that really matters at Auburn now is happening off the field.
It’s probably too late for head coach Gene Chizik to save his job, but there’s a movement under way behind the scenes to keep Jay Jacobs as athletics director.
That movement includes some well-known and powerful Auburn people. One of them is former trustee Earlon McWhorter.
“I consider Jay a friend,” McWhorter wrote me in an email, “but as always, my real concern is Auburn and what is best for Auburn, and I strongly feel keeping Jay Jacobs gives us the best chance to get through some difficult times.”
There are other Auburn supporters who feel just as strongly that firing Chizik but keeping the man that hired him won’t solve the problems that exist but will make it harder to hire the kind of strong, no-nonsense, get-out-of-my-way head coach that Auburn needs.
Sounds like you have a good ol' fashioned dumpster fire on your hands.

I've heard that Mack Brown is looking for a soft place to land...

Mack Brown also gave his endorsement of Chizik. Automatic disqualification.

What a crap job that really ends up as being with the stupid TV network where the coach has to spend so many hours working at
they film practice and show them on the network and the coaches spend a lot of time trying to edit out things that everybody they play is watching.
what a mess, they've successfully lost any chance at really getting a quality coach there once this old man is run off.

Sorry to hijack the thread, my bad.
As far as Jacobs is concerned, he needs to go, he's had his chance in more ways than just football, it would be really smart for Auburn to completely clean house in the football program and also lose Jacobs, IMO.

Some interesting points in that article....Chiz's buy-out is actually much less than competitiors and put in context, it would seem reasonable at the time....given his record at the time and the fact that he just won an NC, I don't think Jacobs made a terrible deal....although it looks that way now.....
This is really more on Chizik than Jacobs i/m/o. Jacobs made a reasonable deal at the time and I assume the President and BOT were well aware of it and blessed the terms...people like McWhorter are scrambling to deflect, avoiding the fan anger over the situation.....AU was more than fair with Chizik and he has all the tools to be reasonably succesful...as much as he can be in the shadow of Saban and Bama.....there is no excuse for his record.
