Lots of new shite. He supposedly promoted a local rap group made of guys he grew up with in NOLA. He appeared on flyers, videos, promotions, etc. SI dug up his entire life history too. Just for those interested.

Which has since been ruled a secondary violation. I noticed in my Auburn Alum news letter recently

quote:

Can businesses display posters or apparel autographed by current student-athletes?

- No. Although displaying team posters, jerseys, etc. is permitted, businesses cannot display any item autographed by a current student-athlete. Displaying a signature on an item within a business is construed as an endorsement of the business by that student-athlete, which is a violation of NCAA amateurism rules.

I wish the OP would have stated that the article was written by Pete Thamel, which means it is fulls of innuendos and assumptions.

The only thing worse is linking to an article written by Thayer Evans or SBB

ETA Sorry, Forget the above as this article was written by Thamel and Evens which is basically a Collaboration of Douchebags

Rooting for the kid to get his shite together and get back on the field, but it's not looking good. If there's even a hint at a possible NCAA violation, LSU won't take him back.

Mathieu is also featured on a flyer for a Jan. 14, 2012, party at Club H2O in New Orleans. The flyers and videos may be a violation of NCAA rule 12.5.2.1, which says that anyone who "accepts any remuneration or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind" is ineligible. A veteran compliance officer with no direct knowledge of Mathieu's case says that any penalties would depend on how commercial the videos were, whether Mathieu knew what they were being used for and if he received any illicit benefits, which would violate a separate NCAA rule. "If this guy is in the video in an attempt to draw people to the place," says the officer, "that's not permissible." LSU says the school, including coach Les Miles, is unaware of players using their images to promote events or receiving extra benefits.

So, he participates in a recreational hobby with his buddies from high school.

I really fail to see the egregious violation here.

Otherwise it was a good read.

gathering a quote from a "veteran NCAA officer with no knowledge of the case" = a lame attempt to legitimize a non-story =/= OMG the NCAA is snooping all over BR!!!!!

This.

This is a weak-sauce article in terms of the "allegations". Its just a very confusing article...it talks about his life story, then randomly in the middle talks about flyers at a club from last January.

Even if this is a violation (it would be a stretch), its a minor one at that.
