FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says he is "steadfastly" committed to coach John L. Smith for this season, despite the program's difficult start.
Long, speaking to a group of reporters following an appearance at the Northwest Arkansas Touchdown Club, said Wednesday he is also committed to the rest of the Arkansas coaching staff, which remained intact after former coach Bobby Petrino's firing in April.
The Razorbacks (1-3) lost their third straight game last week, a 35-26 setback to No. 23 Rutgers. They were 21-5 the last two seasons under Petrino, who was fired for hiring his mistress to a position in the athletic department and initially lying about her presence during an April 1 motorcycle accident.
Long says he expects to hire a long-term coach after the end of the season.

What else is he supposed to say?

Was he informed that it isn't the Alabama program that he is backing?

This is teh only thing he said of importance.
OF course he said he is behind CJLS. Why bad mouth him when he knows he is on his way ot come December?

Our coaching staff is a clusterfrick, and the fact that Long wants us to support such a clusterfrick is outrageous. After getting beat 52-0 on our home field a week after losing to ULM at home, and then having John L's first words at the following press conference were for us to "SMILE!," the decision to reassign/fire John L should have been made. What a fricking joke.

A "setback"? I would call that loss something a little more serious than a setback. Maybe "dumpster fire" would be better.

Because Jeff Long is a logical person of sound mind. I'm so glad an impartial person is runnig our athletic department. Of course I would have fired JLS. Hell, everybody would have fired him. What good would that do at this point? He's not going to be here and there's no point kicking the man while he's down. Sucks to go numb and not care about the rest of the season, but it is what it is.

There is nothing else he can or should do. John L. is an interim coach that will be gone in December.
Leaders have to make sound decisions that benefit their programs or companies for the long-term. A lot of time those decisions look bad in the short-term and they will catch major flak for doing so.
The Arkansas AD is playing this whole thing perfectly, but fans can't see this. Petrino left a major mess that was not going to be fixed this year and Long knew it.
This season was screwed for Arkansas the second Petrino wrecked his bike with his mistress on it. Long understood that. He hired a patsy to go into an unwinnable situation and take the major hits that were going to come his way by the fans and media.
In December, Long will make a very good hire and the Arkansas program will be back on track to be a good program. It will take a little bit of time, but in the long-term Long is doing the right thing.
Most people don't have the ability to understand that though.

anybody else just not give a frick anymore? even if we hire the best coach in the universe, it's another 3 years before we are relevant.
