Prophetic Auburn and Alabama officials in the 1920s...

Ivan Maisel's "Three-point Stance"--third entry from the top
quote:
The Iron Bowl rivalry spent 40 seasons (1908-47) in the desert before Alabama and Auburn agreed to play again. Taylor Watson, the curator of the Paul W. Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa, has unearthed an exchange of letters between officials at the two schools circa 1926 in which Auburn wanted to resume play. In setting aside the request, the Alabama official quoted Auburn then-president Spright Dowell, who had said three years earlier that he feared a “…damaging situation in that foot-ball would tend to become the all-the-year topic at both institutions and all other games, contests, and activities would be made subservient to the one supreme event of the year.” That could never happen.
Dowell, continued: “In the interest of fairness and good sportsmanship, it would seem highly desirable to cherish the growing spirit of good will on the part of Auburn for the University, and on the part of the University for Auburn in the hope that all friends of both institutions will desire each to win every game it plays and that the student-bodies may invariably ‘pull’ for each other.” It’s fair to say that President Dowell's worst fears never included a rivalry that could produce a Harvey Updyke.

This is a fact. Having lived in Mobile for 10 years and spent much of my life there due to family...24/7/365 is really true.

Apparently we didn't have shite going on in this state sports wise in the 1920's besides AU and UA, much like today.

Agreed. Live in Huntsville and it, and the Bear, are all anyone can talk about.

So did Bama refuse to play us? Also I thought we were API at the time and part of Georgia.

Dowell was your president.

You were. And the state legislature should have just added the "blue collar" college to the already existing Capstone of the state of Alabama.

You must hang around in nursing homes a lot. I honestly can't remember the last time I've talked about, or heard anyone talk about Bear Bryant.

Not totally true. I have a loudspeaker on my '79 Chevy truck that I blare audio from the Bear Bryant Show out of when I'm traveling from Sand Mt. to Iuka, MS.

Fricking this. What a load of BS. Nobody just randomly brings up "The Bear" anymore, because we've got the best coach currently in the sport walking our sidelines as it is. The only time I ever hear anything about "The Bear" is when I watch the "Crimson Classics", or am having a convo with friends comparing the different eras.

I think perception is much worse than reality in this case. Most states with no major pro sports or large areas of pro sports states that don't have a franchise are the same way as the state of Alabama.
The MAJOR difference in Alabama and other states is what I call the Finebaum effect. His show and a few copycats dominate local sports talk and that format has unfortunately caught on in the area. Because the dominant show only talks about Alabama/Auburn the perception is that that is all Alabamians care about. Most places without pro sports simply have ESPN affiliates with little to no local focus.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's noticed this. For all the "It's all Bear this, Bear that to them" talk, I've only really ever talked about Bear Bryant with my dad since he watched him coach a game or two. If you get a bunch of gray-haired 'Bama fans together he's likely to come up, but what else do you expect.

Heh... you sound like a Bellefonte Nuclear worker stationed at Yellow Creek or something.
Well, if it still existed.
