I'v been around guys with the "yips" before and they had normal mechanics....just couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. It could be that.....his labrum will be gone in a year or two.

South Carolina's clutch hitting is laughable.

I had two catchers through my career that had the Yips. It was awful but at times provided humor.

he leans to the side on his right knee, holds it out for a full second, then side arm slings it.

I haven't seen the SC catcher so I'm not sure. Both of the guys I knew that had it.. it affected them either way.

I feel like it might have something to do with the fact that Griner is 6'5" playing Catcher as well.

I had it wrong earlier in the season: at first I understood it that Greiner had trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher, and he hesitated while he spun the ball around in his hand to find the seams - much like a QB does in shotgun after having the ball hiked to him. I thought this was something that Greiner did on his own, and that the coaches would soon coach the bad habit out of him...

Now I understand that it was the coaches that TAUGHT him to do that, as it was the only way to fix the bad throw-back to the pitcher: it was the throw-back that was the bad habit, not the hesitation. Hesitating and finding the seams helped reduce the poor throw-backs, so we will just have to grin and bear with it as long as Greiner catches....

He still has poor throw-backs just the same, and the pitcher sometimes has to lunge and leap for the ball. But I guess it's still an improvement from what he used to do before the season....

I have a tough time believing that. Every once in a while he'd find the laces on his first attempt. And what you said doesn't explain the head nod or whatever it is.

Could be a force of habit after a while, and is nodding to the pitcher to signal that he's about to throw.

Pure speculation here though.

Leave it to an Aggie to explain a throwing problem.
