The guy knew that the ball hit the ground, it was actually smart what he did. He knew it hit the ground so he got up and ran with the ball to take everyone's mind off of whether he caught it clean or not and only think why is this guy running down the field after he was on the ground. He did a little acting to divert everyone's attention to something else, it's more common in sports than you would think or notice.
