Mostly yes, but they bring in professionals to help with money, investments and legal that they don't expect anything from other than professional guidance.

But the service is a net benefit to the board member as it helps their CV and online profile and general "good person" credentials...

Also, non-profit governance is very closely monitored by the large donors, and the governance quality is "graded" yearly by organizations like Guide Star to help potential donors understand how efficiently and effectively donated funds are deployed.
