Heading to Europe this summer. London question.

We got about a 13-13.5 hr layover in London this summer when we take the trip across the pond. I'm leaning towards exploring a bit of the city during that stretch. Any folks who've been to London that have an opinion on...
1) is there enough stuff around the airport to make it worth it?
2) have a recommendation to sit tight in the airport or go check some stuff out.
Thanks!

Heathrow or Gatwick? And I assume that if you sit tight you don’t have to bother with immigration, correct?

We had a little longer layover, around 16 hours, and we took the express train from Heathrow to Paddington station, then walked through Hyde park and saw Buckingham, Big Ben, and Westminster Abbey. We had plenty of time to see those things, eat lunch, and hit up a few pubs. I think the express train only took like 15-20 minutes vs the normal train which takes almost 1 1/2 hours.

Plenty of time. As mentioned Heathrow express is maybe 40 minutes and will drop you close to the center of London. Leave your luggage behind of course.

The good news is that you can easily and quickly take the Tube (subway) from Heathrow to downtown London and back.

Heathrow Express - 15-20 mins to Paddingon
Buy hop-on/hop-off bus pass on one of the double decker tour buses. You’ll cover the most ground and hit most of the highlights.
Jump off wherever looks interesting for food/drink/exploring
Grab Heathrow Express back to LHR or Uber depending on time

Lot of great suggestions here but to add and answer your other question I wouldn’t recommend hanging around by the airport for stuff to do. It is further out

Beware of the "customs" at Heathrow.
3oz bottles and all of your other toiletries have to fit in one clear quart size plastic ziplock.
Ridiculous policy.
I recommend the Churchill War Room tour.

I agree with the poster recommending Windsor. Really close to Heathrow. Windsor castle is interesting - maybe not my favorite in England but still really good. The towns of Windsor and adjacent Eton are quaint and walkable. Easy short Thames River cruise can be purchased day of. Hit up the George Inn in Eton for meal. Do the Windsor and Eton ale trail. Great way to spend 12 hours.
