It is a weird "cause and effect", thing. It made the news because he had an affair ("sex sells"). Therefore, casual political observers assume that was also the reason he was impeached. It was also the cornerstone of the laughable defense presented by the Dems and their allies in the media.
Sure, covering up the affair was the reason for all the illegal conduct, but that conduct was the justification for the impeachment.

Not only that, it all began because of a sexual harassment suit against Clinton. Clinton had a pattern as a predator and he lied during that investigation about a predatory relationship with not only a subordinate but an intern.
