Many years ago I was told you can do this if you're making a left turn, across the neutral ground, straight into a red light. You can continue crossing if nobody is coming.

But I have never actually seen the rule or the law on this. And recently my kids have started screaming at me over running a red light. I would like to prove them wrong but can't find anything in the RS to back me up. Is this an old wives tale or is it actually true?

It's a rule of thumb, not a written law.

So you think it's legal to run the red light as long as you're taking a left?

It is legal to make a left turn on red as long as you are not crossing another lane of traffic. The lane you’re turning into must be closest to you.

(To clarify for all the simpleton morons downvoting this, the highway or street you’re turning onto would have to be a one-way)

It’s against the law. Either that or you’re doing a piss poor job of describing what you’re thinking of.

What is a "continuing left"? And what do you mean by "neutral ground"?

Different states have different rules on yellow / red lights. Some states allow you to enter the intersection before the light is red, and make your left turn after it turns red.

It is however LEGAL to turn left at a red light if you are on a one way, turing onto a one way..

That’s only on a one way where you can do that.

Are you talking about this?

And you are going through the red light stopping the cross traffic?

here's a reddit discussion on r/NewOrleans from 6 years ago

You can do it from a one way onto a one way because you aren’t crossing any lanes of traffic, so it’s functionally the same as taking a right on a red.

I don't know about the law, but up here the trend has been a move to a flashing yellow arrow. You still get s solid green, but when it ends, the arrow goes ro flashing yellow which lets you turn left when clear.

ETA: Of course this is just for when the cross traffic has the red. You don't have the light when they have the green. shite, explaing traffic in just words is hard.

You can run every red light no matter the situation if you live in BR and/or drive a Nissan or Dodge from my experience.

Left hand turn from a one way onto a one way after stop on red. It’s not complicated.

There are two place’s in Terrebonne Parish where it is legal to do this. The intersection’s of Hwy 90 and Hwy 24. ( Troop C Intersections coming off of the one-way bridges )

Are you one of those frickheads that gets out into the traffic underneath the green light, only for it to turn red and then you go? Like that somehow doesn't make it illegal? Is that what you're talking about?

Because I want to stab those frickers in the neck. You wait at the line like normal people.

It's my understanding that the back of your car must be past the white line.

It looks like as long as you put your flashers on you'll be ok.

He did not word it well but I know exactly what he's talking about. When you were in the left turning lane and it turns green, but the perpendicular light is still red, do you go? I go every single time. You back up traffic if you stop in the neutral ground.

It’s a justification selfish people make for breaking the law
