It's so dumb that they aren't stretching him out at all.
BMac made a good point on twitter how this is all non-sensical that he is being capped at 3 innings each outing this year when he was throwing 100+ pitches every week a year ago.
Not saying he should throw 100 in a AAA game, but at least let him get up to 75 to start stretching him out so he can be called up to start in Pittsburgh.
Please note the following:
1. The AAA/MLB season is more than twice as long as a college baseball season, therefore a starting pitcher will be tasked with making at least 2x the amount of starts than when in college over a season.
2. Said pitcher will also be tasked with pitching on four to five days rest in AAA/MLB as opposed to at least six if not seven days rest in college baseball.
3. Starting a pitcher off slowly while building stamina in order to make twice as many starts on less rest in between starts requires a process of limiting pitch count early in the build-up process.
The Pirates are accelerating Skenes advancement to the majors, but are taking a measured approach to getting him ready for the grind. There will be an increase in pitch count/innings pitched as the season progresses. The first step is the acclimation to pitching on less rest between starts.
Nothing stupid in the Pirates approach, it is the correct way.

The longtime MLB pitcher and (former?) TD poster disagrees
