Yep. Not realizing if Trump had paid it directly he would have incurred a 40 percent gift tax. By giving it to the charity he avoids that and gets the deduction. OM still B, though!

For the IRS sleuths out there, does the family get taxed on the donation as income like winning a prize or raffle more than 1,200 dollars.
