As March Madness brews, I looked up the last time my tigers made the final four. Note, I am 24 and don't remember any basketball history from before like 2012. I saw that LSU made the Final Four in 2006 and then fired their coach two seasons later... What's the story here? John Brady seemed to have some success at LSU, was he fired for one bad start to a season only two years removed from a final four appearance? What happened, recruiting? Coaching? Was this basically a Coach O fall from glory type thing or just how the cookie crumbled? Anyone who remembers that era please feel free to fill me in

He wasn't the most personable guy when he was here. And he wasn't the most ardent recruiter.

His most successful team was built on the back of a recruiting class of players less than a mile from LSU's campus.

He rubbed a bunch of people the wrong way personally and really seemed to mail it in after that Final Four team.

I loved me some Brady Ball though.

ETA:

Also pretty inconsistent. Every time we thought we were building a top program we'd regress. Sweet 16 in 2000, 2-14 in the SEC in 2001. Final Four in 2006, 5-11 in the SEC in 2007.

Brady was already on the hotseat thanks to a poor season (2006-07) before the year of his dismissal (2008) when The Tigers lost 8 of their first 10 SEC games.

Got lazy after the final 4, openly flirted with NC State, wasn’t the nicest guy in those days (some players hated him, often took shots at fans for supporting football and baseball more), basically lost that graft and desire to get the program successful and it rubbed off on the team. The tough defense and good rebounding dwindled and he was never an offensive mastermind. He had some bad luck with Tasmin Mitchell and Chris Johnson missing time in 07/08 and his prized recruit Anthony Randolph had a degree of Ben Simmons-itus in his attitude. But starting 06/07 top 5 after a final 4 and not even making the tournament was the beginning of the end. He was also allergic to consistently recruiting point guards outside of Tack Minor who was a bust.

That said the 99/00 and 05/06 seasons were beyond fun. Im glad he’s back as the radio guy and in a good place at LSU. Im sure he wishes it had gone differently after the final four.

He got severely outcoached in the 2006 Final Four and UCLA kicked his shite in. They played Zone and we couldn't shoot them out of it. On offense, UCLA ran all night and had LSU sucking wind.

It was more the opposite of the Coach O situation, honestly.

As stated above, Brady was gruff and unpleasant, and rubbed people the wrong way. The Powers That Be here didn't like that, much like they didn't like Saban telling them to frick off. But Brady didn't have Saban-level of success, so he didn't get the same immunity from boosters that Saban did. They waited for him to have a drop-off, and canned him with the quickness when he did.

About recruiting; much has been made of the Collis Temple AAU ties (getting all those local guys), but he recruited well enough in my opinion. The first batch (2000 team) had Stromile Swift, Jabari Smith, Ronald Dupree.
He had the following:
SEC Player of the Year- 2000 Swift, 2005 Brandon Bass, 2006 Glen Davis.
SEC Freshman of the Year: Bass 2003-4, Davis 2004-5, Tyrus Thomas 2005-6.

You also had other top local guys like Tasmin Mitchell, who was supposed to be elite (Parade All American 1st Team, etc), but was "merely" very good... and he might have been the reason for Brady's demise.

Tasmin was intended to be the centerpiece of the 2007 team. But he got hurt 3 games into that season and missed the year. LSU had a bad year, Brady got fired. Tasmin came back the next year, and playing alongside Marcus Thornton (2008 POTY) and Garrett Temple, LSU went 27-8 and won the SEC at 13-3.

That was Trent Johnson's first season, and we all thought/expected he would continue Brady's run, and that LSU was firmly established as a Top 20 team (kinda like football, hey anyone can win here).
We wuz wrong

You could say we're still paying for the arrogance of firing a coach that got us to the Final Four, because 'we can do better'.

I think the most concise answer was, he was a dick.

He alienated almost everyone at every level of the program and beyond, fans, admins, players, support staff, high school coaches, other coaches...on and on.

He came in with a chip on his shoulder and I've heard always felt like no on respected him and that he didn't deserve a job at this level. He wore that chip with him everywhere, i think he'd even admit that now. And when he went to the Final 4 he doubled down and really alienated some folks so when it went the wrong way his last two years he made it easy to convince most people to move on from him.

I would say as far as gameplanning and in game bench coaching he's the best we've ever had at that in my lifetime. He was the best inbound play coach we've ever had, he had great ones, consistently.

Brady deserved a lot more rope than he was given. Not only did he get a team to the Final 4, he coached the team for several years under seriously heavy sanctions.

Things I have heard.

I have heard that Brady despised the AAU system and the influence those coaches have. While is probably not that uncommon few coaches are vocal about it and, as I recall, Brady was The result was that it impacted recruiting, as I understand it.

I also heard Brady didn't like schmoozing with the high-dollar boosters and pissed a few of those off.

If those two things are indeed correct then the resulting slide in recruiting translated into declining performance and gave those influential boosters who did not like him the ammo to have him escorted from the building. But also if they are true his departure was probably inevitable. He seems like a different person now, though.

I don't know if those things were a fact, just an often repeated thing back then in the circles I talked with, not real connected.

I have heard Brady talk about his time at LSU and the mistakes he made. He got very paranoid with Dale still being in BR and around the program. He said usually when you take over a program the outgoing coach is usually fired and doesn't stick around. Dale was in the building a lot and Brady got paranoid and thought Dale was undermining him. I think Brady was a good X and o coach but was very hard on the players. That wore thin with many of them.

We went to the final four. I was always a big fan of Brady. He is a nice guy. Talked to him several times.

At the time, the year after the final four was so up and down after such a strong year. Struggled with getting along with players and keeping them. Then the following year, had a very talented roster but started off bad. It was time for him to move on. He is so defensive minded. Very old school coach. Butch Pierre should have been the next coach at lsu imo.

He was a pretty good coach but his players didn’t really like him and a lot left the program that could’ve helped us a lot. He struck gold with the f4 team of local guys but didn’t have a ton of good will built up outside of that. Seems like a different guy on the radio now, positive and friendly. Maybe he matured or maybe he just has less pressure but does a good job on the radio.
