“If there was a 3-point line, I think he (would have had) nine points more per game just by the shots he took where he took them," Brown said, referencing a study on Maravich's shot distribution from former LSU reporter at The Advocate Sam King. "... And if he would have known there was a 3-point shot, or if there was a shot clock that would have sped things up, his record would have been totally impossible (to break). Houdini couldn't break his record."
Maravich also accomplished both feats without ever playing in an NCAA Tournament game – the field was significantly smaller in those days – or in an SEC Tournament game, as that event didn't exist when he played. Maravich did play in the NIT as a senior, but he also participated in fewer regular-season games (26) than what modern college teams play today.
