If you like history, Springfield, Illinois is a good stop. Lots of Lincoln history there, including his last home, the Capitol bldg, Lincoln’s Tomb.

You’d have to REALLY like history to enjoy that.

The Dells are very touristy but good if you have kids. But I’d recommend a road trip starting in Northern Wisconsin, up through the UP, and then down into the lower peninsula of Michigan. Visit and/or stay at places on the water in Minoqua, Eagle River, Marquette, Mackinac Island, Traverse City, Saugatuck. Go in mid/late summer so the water is warm.

If that’s covering too much ground I’d recommend renting a place on Torch Lake and then maybe another place on or near Lake Michigan down by Saugatuck. West side of Michigan is beautiful.
