Obviously there is a lot of talk in regards to Brian Kelly being tempted to the Michigan job. However, it remains to be seen if that is fully true. So for now we can make judgments based on the common sense we know.

LSU recruiting:
LSU in 2025 has an absolutely loaded class starting with the top 3 players for their position. Arguably most talent Kelly will ever assemble. 2026 probably even better with 4 five star prospects. Add in Saban retiring, and you have something that is really building nicely. Why leave that?

LSU staff:
Brian Kelly has assembled a superstar staff thus far, arguably the best DL coach with the top young DC in the nation. You think he spent time trying to put that together? I bet you he did. Why would he leave that?

LSU resources:
LSU has proven to do whatever is necessary to provide everything BK wants. Fired whole defensive staff, NIL investment, paying top money to any coach he wants.

Brian Kelly’s contract:
He’s one of the highest paid coaches in the country. 10 million a year right? Buyout would be crazy, he has job security. You think Michigan is gonna pay more than LSU who might offer him a raise?

Michigan situation:
Michigan is definitely going to get some penalties of some sorts. Depends on how bad it is forced. BK would walk in already with his hands tied behind his back with that. Along with this Michigan has an older team, they are in for rebuild. Really think he wants to start over with new staff, new players, new AD?

Pressure:
There is this word “pressure” that is floating around in these BK reports to Michigan. Along the lines of he has big time pressure to bring a title to LSU. You don’t think that would be the case for Michigan? In this situation he would be replacing a NC coach fresh off that title who is a superhero to that program. Pressure being an issue makes no sense, just like “fit”

With all of this, does it make sense for Brian Kelly to leave LSU? Think about it.

If he does leave he just plain out doesn’t like LSU or the south perhaps, but there is no evidence of that at all in his coaching and how he is building this program.

It probably doesn't help that the LSU Lakes look terrible and he has to see that when it sits on his porch.

You should include a link to the press conference where Kelly himself said, "Lsu is the last stop for me, I want to win a championship at LSU" Those words (or something very similar) came out of the mans mouth.

I don't have a link to it, but maybe you can find it.

I was thrilled with the Kelly hire, and still am. However, I don't care who comes calling, no raises and no extensions until some hardware is in the trophy case. if he wants to flirt for a raise, call his bluff. if he goes before he wins anything, well bye.

eta: "pressure", as a reason for his possible departure. i'm pretty sure the man faced pressure right in the face and said i am coming to LSU for 1 reason and 1 reason only, to win it all.......and that was with Saban still at bama. I don't think he's fleeing due to pressure.

Hmmm let me think, down south sun fun and food, the best recruits now no Saban gone.
But yeah I’m sure he is dying to get back into the shite cold and bland food and average recruits as quickly as possible.
If he is like most coaches he wants to compete in the best conference and with one of the best teams.
He is where he wants to be.

I never know what's driving this 'talk.' IMO, the express reason for CBK to leave ND was to win a natty before father time overcame him.

IDK if he has the luxury of changing jobs again this late in his career.

I agree with all this. It is kind of funny because it could be Kelly’s agent trying to do work on his biggest client and get him a raise. He was probably watching Sexton sling bullets line the rest of the sports world and thought they should at least do the same.

Had to stop at this paragraph….you realize he wouldn’t be “leaving” anything….he’ll probably take those commits with him.

I’m not saying I think Kelly leaves….I don’t think he will because of the potential NCAA hammer coming….but this is a weak excuse for him to stay.

Would his legacy be tainted if he jumped to a program coming off an undefeated, national championship season and won another title?

The state of the program is not going to prevent a coach from leaving to go to a program he wants to go to. I cannot put it any more simply.

I don't know if Kelly wants to go to Michigan, or if Michigan even wants him. But how good things appear to be headed here will be meaninglessly inconsequential if he simply covets the Michigan job.

If Michigan wants to hire Kelly his buyout for leaving is only $3 million.

quote:

Coaching contracts generally include a seven-figure buyout that a coach must pay for leaving a job before his contract expires. Kelly’s buyout, for instance, would be $4 million if he departs LSU before Dec. 31, 2022. His exit fee drops to $3 million in 2023 and $2 million in ’24.
