Free speech has never been a problem. You just need a general population that’s intelligent enough to discern……..and not mutter “muh democracy”

True. Even the Romans allowed free speech (during their more free regimes). Can't remember his name but there was a popular Roman actor who did comedy similar to Don Rickles. He would say stuff like:
'We're honored to have our esteemed Emperor in the audience today. Caesar, I'm sure you get a lot of complaints about how you're running Rome. There's nothing wrong with Rome we can't fix with one simple move. Just get a new Emperor.'
The crowd would laugh and so would the Emperor because of the context.
If speech context was really dreadful the punishment was that you lost freedom of speech.
