A keyboard controller does not generate sounds by itself. It is plugged into another device, often a computer, to control software or another synth. A synthesizer generates sounds itself. Not all synthesizers have keys. Also, most synths do not have onboard speakers so you will have to get speakers.

You can plug a MIDI controller into an iPad as well (with the right adapter) and do some cool stuff. AudioKit Synth One is a free app that has some cool sounds. Garage Band is obviously free as well
