It does appear that something darted through the water near him. Not saying it was a shark for sure, but fish swimming by a brightly lit boat at night is a fact. No doubt there were sharks around. Whether one got him or not is anyone’s guess, but the fact he did not attempt to get the donut is baffling.

Let the shark speculation rest, the kid is gone. Whether it was a shark or not doesn’t matter

I just don’t think that he understood in that moment that it was likely his only chance to locate the buoy and swim to it.

He chose to swim to the illuminated boat filled with all of his friends first. Then, once he was left behind he couldn’t find the buoy, and the boat couldn’t find him.
