I have him third. But his resume definitely gives him an argument for the GOAT. Strictly talking about NBA.

He had the most unstoppable shot. Skyhook undefeated.

His best years were pre Bird and Magic. So no one really watched enough to appreciate him. Stats don’t lie though.

Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. is such an awesome name. Too bad he changed it to that Flight 93 crap.

3,4, or 5.... Wilt, Bill Russell, and him are all in the same boat... they could all be ranked at any of those 3 spots and the argument would be totally valid for that ranking, in any combination thereof...

I’m not saying you didn’t see him play, but it frustrates me when people claim or speak on a guy they never actually watched. Like someone 25 years old saying Gale Sayers was the best running back of all time. It’s fine if someone born in 1940 says that, but someone born decades after he played just seems a little ridiculous

He didn't really try, except in the playoffs.

Tbh, you could rank him anywhere from #1-4 and make a good argument. I have him ranked third as well.

Need to look at the question with the context of his time.

Wilt Chamberlin, HAkeem Oulajowan(sic?), and Kareem, are to me the 3 best centers offensively at a time when getting paint touches was considered good offense.

Russell was best defensive center.
Moses Malone would be in the conversation as well.

I probably over rate Kareem because I am a Lakers fan.

Kareem retired when I was 8, so I can’t recall ever seeing him play.

Sustained superior performance at the most important position in the game, as it was played then.
At center, either second behind Wilt, or first if you think Wilt played against 6'7" white guys.
