Offense or Defense
O: Hopefully, Gus gets back to calling shots, Jovon and K. Johnson play to their potential and Gus and Hand find their Tulsa chemistry.
D: Regardless of Steele's coaching, we have the most depth and maybe talent of any AU D line in several years.

He flat out said to us at Tiger Trek that he was going back to more hands on with the offense. He said that he had try to be more of a CEO type coach last year and is going to go back to having his hands in the offense. Hopefully the addition of Hand will help him balance his offense (possibly a voice of reason that he will listen to) and hopefully Burns will be able to get the most out of our very talented receiver group.
On defense, I'm not sure what to expect of them. We have talent every where on the field but we have in year's past too.

I think defense, I base most of that on the last few games of last year, and the awesome bowl game performance

fify
Best defensive roster since at least 07.
Even if Steele is as bad as some think, with the talent level this should still be the best Auburn defense of the decade by default

When is the last time we had this many 5* players on roster?
Long time if ever?

True. I really only remember Tray Blackmon and that one big fat JUCO DT that never did shite for 5*s on D under Tubs.
But then again we've had plenty of 5* busts since Tubs, and he was a master of finding hidden gems on D. I mean he turned Karlos Dansby from a skinny WR into one of the best LBs in the NFL for over a decade.... So recruiting stars aren't always the best measure.
The more I think about it the more I'm concerned about the coaching though. 2003 had the most talent on defense I can remember and that team lost 5 games. They lost 3 LBs to the NFL and still went undefeated the next year.

Don't believe anything you hear on Tiger Trek. If you go back and watch Tiger Trek from last year you'll laugh your arse off at how wrong Gus was about the season

I was thinking about this the other day...The starting lineup could look like this.
5* Carl Lawson
5* Monty
4* Dontavius Russel
5* Byron Cowart
Backed up by:
Marlon Davidson 5*
Derrick Brown 5*
Devaro Lawrence #1 JUCO DT IIRC
Swain is plenty serviceable as well and Andrew Williams was a solid 4* recruit who should finally have the right size to play inside.

That was Davonte Lambert. Easily confused as they both came from GMC, OV'd the same weekend and both tweener guys

DOn't forget
4* DT/DE Prince Tega Wanogho
4/5* Antwuan Jackson
4* DE/OLB Jeff Holland
With additional guys like
DE Rasheed Kennion - Meaningful playing time so far
DE/OLB Paul James III - JUCO sack leader or something
DE Nick Coe - If qualifies supposedly great
ETA: If we aren't at least a formidable front 7, something is seriously wrong within Auburn football given the personnel

Didn't forget just left out because IMO

4* DT/DE Prince Tega Wanogho
Won't contribute much this year. Still learning the ropes. I hope we get to see him in garbage time.

4/5* Antwuan Jackson
I've heard he'll redshirt and that makes since given our depth.
quote:
4* DE/OLB Jeff Holland
I want badly for him to be an OLB since we don't really need him on the line. Need LBs
quote:

See above comments on Holland
quote:
DE Rasheed Kennion
Better than Gimmel President, that's for sure.

I did forget about him actually. Hope he qualifies

D: I'm really excited to see what our defense has to show us this year. We are absolutely stacked on the defensive line and I am cautiously optimistic about our LB core. We finally have a lock down corner and plenty of depth in the secondary. And i know that other fan bases, including our own think Steel is a shite hire, but with the amount of talent we return and add to the depth chart, even an average defensive coordinator can field a top 25 defense.
O: We know what we are going to get this year. A heavy dose of Sean handing off to JR with wild cat packages for JF3. Passing tree will look exactly the same as its ever been and our kicking game will be fricking awesome. If Gus can pull his head out of his arse inside the red zone we will be in a position to win every game.

Both PJ3/Holland should be situational pass rushers. They may do it from a 3-4 OLB role but still worth noting as that pull a DL out

Kennion should be a solid DE on passing downs. He has enough game experience to not just be another ignored "3rd string bench"

Everyone complains about Auburn's lack of defensive fundamentals, tackling, missed assignments etc. This hire screams "We hear your and are trying to fix it." Steele's reputation from everything I've read is to teach fundamentals and doing your job right.
Steele may not be able to mid game adjust to shut down opponents like say 2010, but I imagine our defense won't look stupid botching tackles and being out of position either.

Don't be surprised if Marlon Davidson starts over Cowart.
He was running with the 1s in spring with Cowart behind him. Word was Cowart improved big time, lost bad weight and added good weight, but Davidson is just that good apparently.

For the two DE positions, I'd be perfectly happy with a breakdown of snap share something along these lines
Carl Lawson - 75-80%
Cowart/Davidson - 55-60% each
Situation/Rotational guys- 5-10%

You will not see Prince Wanogho on defense this year. He has switched to the offensive line.

What? I haven't read that anywhere.

He probably is thinking of Prince Sammons who is listed as a DE for recruiting but was brought in as an OT
ETA: 30 seconds of searching suggests there is a rumor floating around that Tega will move to OL
