Born in Huntsville. Moved to the Shoals in middle school. Have lived in Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Muscle Shoals. Went to Auburn for a year (91-92). Had a little too much fun...LOL. Currently reside in Madison, but spend the majority of my time working in Afghanistan.

Aw man-no prob-just started wondering if i needed to add florence to my list of desired quiet weekend getaways....that i actually never go on.
If you like to fish the enitre Shoals area is a great place, including further to the east to Rogersville which is between Florence and Athens on Hwy 72.

Born and raised in Dothan. Live in Mobile. Northview went to complete garbage in football after I graduated and Dubose came in as coach...not sure what the football team is like now.

The 'View representing! I graduated in 82 (yes, I'm old get a haircut) and the football team is only moderately less like hot garbage. Northview and Dothan need to consolidate into one school, Dothan isn't big enough for 2 6A schools.

There was talk of Northview and Dothan consolidating in the late 90s and early 00s. If that happened the athletics would be pretty solid but for some reason there is not an abundantcy of home grown talent in Dothan. There are a few that always come out if he area and play D1 sports but not like in other areas of the State.

Florence is the perfect college town IMO. It's what Auburn used to be.
What are you doing in Afghanistan?

The new superintendent is looking into it again. Plan is to make Northview the high school with 10-12 grades and Dothan High would be a 9th grade academy.

It is strange, I can't think of any kids in the last few years that have been seriously pursued by D1 schools.

If I had to guess, he is a contractor, or government worker and works out of the Redstone. There were literally contractor cities in Afghanistan back in 2011.

If you attended elementary school in Prattville any time in the last 60 years or so, you probably had one of my kin as a teacher.
That I did back in the 90s. What is your kin's name?

To be honest, if I was going to college in the state right now, I'd go to UNA.

That's where I went to college. It's a nice little school. I don't know what it's like now, but it was a good place in the 00's. For the size of Florence (35,000 people), UNA brought a large population of eye candy to the town.

I did dual enrollment there while in high school. The late Dr. Nelson was the best professor I ever had throughout my college days and I've been to three universities total. I was also a UNA bleacher creature as a pup.
As far as visiting for the weekend, I'd recommend coming for Handy Fest, or just generally to fish. I don't generally think of Florence as a tourist attraction though.
As far as the eye candy, there is plenty of it. Good bar scene as well. OTR, Flobama, and a couple of others popping up in Sheffield since they're trying to build up that area. One guy I know owns Warehouse 414 and he plays all kinds of music.
The only drawback to Florence is its dense Bammer population.

The only drawback to the entire state of Alabama is its dense Bammer population.

I never had Nelson. When I took my Western Civ courses as a freshman I had the venerable Dr. Ott. He was a character too (an older grumpy man who wore a top hat).
BTW, Dr. Nelson passed away a few years back.

Agreed. It's "Row Tahd" all fricking year around here. Every top notch high-school player in NW Alabama is crimson through and through. I can't think of but maybe 1 or 2 recruits from the Shoals that signed with AU. Auburn will pull a few from the H'ville area here and there, but they almost never get any from the Shoals. (Of course, the Shoals doesn't produce many highly ranked recruits, but when they do, they are all bammer).
Anyway, if you like smaller town environments, Florence is the best in the state, by far. It is small, but not too small as to be completely boring. It also has a nice position geographically: it is only 2 hours from both Nashville and B'ham and only 1 1/2 hours from Huntsville. It has most everything you need to live comfortably without being too big. It has a pretty good hospital in the center of town (I mean I don't want to drive 30 minutes to get to an ER when I get a fishhook in my foot). It has a lot of restaurants and bars. It has a river and hosts some well known fishing tourneys. There's a couple of good golf courses too.
I dunno, I was raised here and I still think it's a good place to live. I've lived in other states and always missed it at some point.

I work on the C-RAM (Counter-Rocket, Artillery, Mortar) program. It is the CIWS gun from navy ships on a flatbed trailer that tracks and shoots at incoming artillery.

Bad Night in Basrah Back When We Were in Iraq the First Time
There were between 9-15 rounds coming into the FOB at the same time. The ammo drum on the system doesn't hold a shite load of ammo. The guy screaming for HE at the end of the video is screaming for ammo.
There are more videos on youtube.
