Columbus GA

Thank you, Auburn and U.S. Navy, for getting me the hell out.

My sisters keep telling me that I have to move back down to be close to them (I currently live in Woodstock GA).

I keep telling them that, no, I sure as hell don't!

My mom was from Columbus and man that place sucks. When she went back, she said it really had developed and gotten better.

If this is what "better" looks like, it must have been Detroit level bad in the 60s/70s

It has.

Parts of Downtown Columbus are no longer the shitty ghetto they used to be. But overall, Columbus is just a bigger version of the shitty hole-in-the-wall it used to be, mainly because that's the way the "powers that be" in that city like it. (Example: I-85 back in the day was originally designed to go through and cross the Chattahoochee in Columbus. The "powers that be" (powerful families like the Bradley's, the Woodruff's, the Jordan's, etc.) didn't want that, so I-85 was built to cross the river in LaGrange and a dead-end spur (I-185) was built to Columbus.)

Did OSUT there from May 14th to August 30th. Good riddance to that hellhole. On the Army's birthday I got to leave basic and watch their minor league team though. I drank like five red bulls and ate a whole pizza that night.

Back when I was but a wee piker, if soldiers left the reservation any farther than Victory Drive, they were in danger of being arrested.

Yeah well, in the modern day military, there is something called a "pass." We only had that 6 hour pass plus another 12 hour pass about a month later. That's not a lot for 14 weeks of training.

You didn't understand.

If they left too far off of Fort Benning, the CITY COPS would arrest them. Just because.

The powers-that-be didn't cotton to all those strange soldier boys in their city and didn't want them there.

At the time I was there, Columbus had like the third highest STD rate.

Sounds like you chose a fine Victory Drive establishment then.

Place called the "Traffic Light " or Red light. Something like that. it was a Loooooooong time ago.

I was only about 20. Was at Lake Martin on a fishing tournament. A big group of guys went there one night and I went along.

It kinda scared me.

Holy shite, man, of all the strip joints available in Columbus, y'all went to the fricking TRAFFIC LIGHT?

It doesn't exist anymore, but this is what the only comment I can find on the internet said about it back in 2005:

https://columbusga.blogspot.com/2005/10/2-oct-05-lights-out-main-gate-reads-two.html

quote:

"MAIN GATE" reads two big signs above the intersection of Victory Drive and Fort Benning Road. Now that's the way to help the S.O.A. Watch protesters find their way around Columbus next month.

But there could be much more to the placement of two big "Main Gate" signs on this corner near Fort Benning. This appears to be the new name of the Traffic Light Inn - one of the more notorious names along Victory Drive. If you're not familiar with it, let's just say the "light" left on for you often was red....

The Traffic Light Inn and the adjacent Traffic Light Lounge gained a reputation for (ahem) sexy activity. Columbus city officials worked for years to put the lounge out of business, and it now stands empty. For some odd reason, neither "God Bless Fort Benning" nor S.O.A. Watch have claimed it as office space.

The Traffic Light Inn went on Fort Benning's "off-limits list" several months ago. That list hasn't received much attention lately - but for many of the businesses on it, it's been the economic equivalent of Benning soldiers firing mortar shells at them.

That place was a hive of prostitution and drug dealing. I'm glad to see you survived.

P.S. Lanier's, here's your ol' stomping grounds today:

Enterprise, AL born and raised though I've been everywhere thanks to the USMC.

Oh and I graduated HS in '06 and we never ONCE lost to Dothan or Northview. Just thought I'd throw that out there for the few Dothan people I saw.

Don't think so. It's a sad sight, had great-grandparents that spent their whole lives working there...

It was smoldering/burning forever. I lived right down the road at the time it happened. I must've been sleeping hard that night because I don't remember hearing any ambulances or police cars.

Awesome....

Remember, I was 20 years old and it was my first time to a strip joint. I was about to piss in my pants when we went to the door. Dude just let me in. I was 20 but looked 15.

We walked in and there was a stage right next to the main entrance. There was a dude, military type, laying on the floor with a dollar bill in his mouth. A big ugly bitch hovering over him and I think you know the rest.

I had thoughts of what a strip joint would be and that was not it. Unreal. Had some ugly Korean bitch come sit in my lap and wanted me to buy her a drink.

I eventually learned what a real strip joint was but that was my first experience. Me and about 10 more fishermen who had been here before.
