What is wrong with our defense

Leave the bullshite outside please.

What is wrong with our defense? Our pass rush isn't great but our secondary seems awful.

Are our passing woes solely on our secondary? Watching parts of the LSU/Bama game last night and seeing their secondaries close on slants and make hits at point of the catch, why are we unable to be remotely close to the receiver when he catches the ball? Pass rush won't help us when a team throws slants on us and gains nearly 10 yards a play.

Are our problems schemes, coaching, players not doing what they are supposed to do or a combination of everything?

Out of position, take bad angles, miss tackles, no pressure on QB from the line, no pressure on WRs from the secondary. AWFUL 1st half team.

Bad tackling makes everything look worse than it is.

If we make the tackles we whiff and improve the pass rush a little bit, we have a decent defense.

IMO, the lack of pressure from the front four is a problem. Our blitzes come aren't disguised very well and Robenson Therezie is a liability in pass coverage. He can't guard a soul when left one on one. Mincy is also awful, so that doesn't help either.

is this on the coaches or on the players that we have?

no pressure on QB from the line,

Losing Lawson helps with this but how do we not have more than one pass rusher on an entire team?

no pressure on WRs from the secondary.

Again, is this coaches, lack of players being covered or schemes?

It seems like there isn't ebough pressure up front. If we just rush 4, the OL easily picks them up. To put pressure in the QB, we have to blitz. If we blitz, we leave our DBs in man to man and our DBs are largely under performing. Everyone in D can be playing better, but it seems like we have a gaping hole in the middle.

It is several things.

1) Pass rush. We don't have a 4 man pass rush.

2) Because of 1, we have to blitz but we aren't very good at blitzing. Frost and Cass both are great in run support and Frost isn't bad covering but neither can blitz.

3) Corners are small, but because of 1 and 2 we have to lock them up in man coverage which is hard enough as it is but made more difficult because of our size.

The secondary doesn't play smart. There is a talent issue there, especially with depth, but the biggest problem is the consistent busted plays we see all the time. Missed assignments, bad angles tackling, all around it's just not a good unit. The coaches want to bench Mincy badly, but there is legitimately nobody else we can put there and expect to do any better.

The defensive line, as you all know, lacks a dominant edge rusher. There are also some communication issues between The LBs and the defensive line, and that's leading to a lot of the big runs you are seeing.

I think this should be said.

We have recruited very well on defense and there is no excuse. It comes down to the players have the WANT TO to be playmakers.

Gabe Wright has been very disappointing throughout his career. He's a white-collar player at a blue-collar position. Same for Jeff Whitaker. Elijah Daniel came as a pass rusher and he's been disappointing. Mincy has gone 25 steps backwards. Holsey and Ford cant stay out their own way. There are plenty others...

Just a lot of players that have not lived up to billing.

You don't have to have a dominant edge rusher if you have dominant inside rushers. That's were I lay blame on Gabe and Adams. There is no way those 2 should be blockable at this point, especially Gabe. We didn't have dominant edge rushers in 2010

Combination of things. Teams have tape to see our weak spots. They isolate on certain players like therezie. We bring the safties down to blitz, or cover void left by blisters, thus no help over the top.

Also both bama's and lsu's qb suck. And there were plenty of times lsu gave up the slant to cooper.

We can stop the run, Uga will be better for us.

Exactly, I didn't think a ton of the last staff, but there was a reason they moved him to RB. He's good against the run, but HORRIBLE in pass coverage.

Agree. We are very weak in the middle and I for the life of me do not understand why TAM did not exploit that more. Ole Miss burned us on that route down the middle all night and TAM hit it twice last night. Then they stopped throwing it. I told my wife that I would throw it 10 times per game. You are going to hit it 8 of them.

Our tackling is very bad right now. This was not the case earlier this year. We were actually tackling pretty well. If they dont step up against Gurley and Chubb, we will lose. Those two are very hard to tackle.

No pass rush is known. Wont get any better this year. We will have to live with it.

this sounds like it all falls to the coaches not getting them ready then. what are the chances we see a move with the coaches at the end of the year? I haven't really seen a problem with what Garner is doing up front, we just can't seem to land the key pieces that we need to make a dominant front four. We land one guy to add to it but can't get the others to help.

I thought lack of pass rush was a big factor. We had a solid pass rush against Ole Miss and still got thrown on all day. I really think it's the scheme we run. Teams have figured out the holes in it. Lack of talent is part of it. At the end of the day I keep going back to the scheme. Holes abound in it.

It's coaching.

I don't know much about football, but when I see the offense line up and I can tell you what they are gonna run...... I feel like the defensive coordinator should know too.

I think that Ellis is running out of ways to create pressure or atleast show blitz. The whole run frost and cass to the line and drop them back isnt working

Mincy would not start at any other SEC school. Ford might turn out to be a great player, but he is a converted RB, and we are expecting too much from him. Our LBers are good. Our DL is average. It is what it is.

ETA:

Next year, Trey Matthews will be roaming back there. Pair him with our tall CBs we have recruited the past few years, and we'll be fine.

In some games this year, yes. In others, no.

Yesterday they both sucked arse in run support.

This beef between cheese and JW cost us a natty. I would rather he find a new home next year. B
