Very few SEC coaches have been fired/“resigned” without a .500 or less season

I sincerely hope Gus gets the chance to go home to Mama because I doubt he gets fired this year. Maybe not even next year.
Consider the following list with coaches to be fired or “resigned” and their worst season’s record:
Houston Nutt - Ole Miss - 2-10
Will Muschamp - Florida - 4-8 (6-5 his last season)
Tommy Tuberville - Auburn - 5-7
Gene Chizik - Auburn - 3-9
Mike Shula - Alabama - 4-9 (6-6 his last season)
Sylvester Croom - Miss St - 3-9 (4-8 his last season)
Derek Dooley - Tennessee - 4-8
Phillip Fulmer - Tennessee - 5-7
Joker Phillips - Kentucky - 2-10
Ed Orgeron - Ole Miss - 3-9
*Butch Jones - Tennessee - most likely sub.500
Outliers:
Rob Zook - Florida - 7-4
Mark Richt - Georgia - 6-7 (9-3 his last season)
Les Miles - LSU - 2-2 (fired midseason)
Should be noted that the Rob Zook firing was heavily criticized but obviously forgiven after Urban Meyer’s run. Mark Richt also had an extensive career at Georgia before wearing out his welcome as their coach.
Point is - I don’t think you should expect Gus to be fired this season. Maybe even next. It’s very uncommon for SEC head coaches to be fired without having a losing season. We should roll over Arkansas, and I think we lose to A&M. Though Gus is good at beating mid-tier teams. We most likely finish the regular season 8-4, 7-5 at the worst.
Next season could be a challenge for him to avoid the moribund season with Washington, @Georgia, and @Alabama on the schedule. If Tennessee gets revitalized, that could be a tough game. Slip up against LSU, and maybe the season tanks enough to warrant firing him.
But there’s little precedent set for coaches being fired with 8-win seasons no matter how frustrating they are.

There is historical evidence in our rivalry series for coaches who lose to much in certain rivalries.

Mark Richt had multiple 10 win seasons, won almost all of their super bowl games.
Les Miles won a Natty. What's embarassing there is because he lost to Auburn, AUBURN, he was fired. That hurts.

How far back do you have to go to find someone getting fired for losing to our rivals? The 70s?

Yeah I know history and all, but when Stevie Wonder can see that Gus is the problem here and not players (which you know have to be pissed). I think you can start to make exceptions. Like the Zook deal he lost games UF with that talent had no business losing.

And those two are outliers. Richt gave Georgia similar frustrations as Gus is giving us. It took them a decade to finally can the guy because SEC coaches don’t get fired for winning seasons.

Must be good to be the tallest midget then.

still plenty of games to reach .500 this year. sounds like the beginning of losing the team when guys are bitching about the play calling.

Our best case would be for Bert to get fired, and Gus leave for Arky. We can only hope.

It will be easy to justify firing Gus once we get gangbanged by UGA and Bama this year.
Honestly outside of 2013, what are some big wins Gus can hang his hat on?

I also remember a stat in 2013 that when Auburn scores > 30 they win 100% of the time.
Then...
Point being, precedence doesn't matter especially when it's already been broken.

And then he says he's taking his coaches with him... and they all refuse to go.

I agree. He’s got nothing. But it would be outside of the norm to fire him for losing to the wrong teams. If someone can find examples for me, I’ll go along with it. I just don’t see us firing him when it very rarely happens to guys that go 8-4.

This guy gets what I already said in this thread.

So one example from 30 years ago?
And that one is contested as Bill Curry was offered a contract extension before he resigned to coach at Kentucky.

I’m pissing myself off. I was thinking no way he makes it past this year if he loses to Georgia and Alabama, but recent history says he needs a total debacle of a season to get canned.
