Thoughts from yesterday

Feel free not to read but these are therapeutic for me...

1. JJ- nothing else really needs to be said. Obviously he has the physical tools but the reads he were making yesterday were shockingly bad. It was clear as soon as he let each of those balls go they were going to be intercepted. All we can do here is hope it was first game jitters. Hated him sliding 1/2 yard from the first down marker on the 2nd drive. Hated even more not going for it.

2. RBs- Good to see all three get action but I kind of hope Gus doesn't already abandon Roc and Jovon and decide Barber is his guy to get 95% of the touches since Gus doesn't like to rotate. Obviously he was the most productive but Roc wasn't getting a lot of help and it's pretty well known it's easier to run the ball later in games against tired defenses. Overall average game for the backs.

3. WRs- Need more from Duke but it was good to see Louis have a decent game and Jason Smith show flashes even though his big play was called back. Admittedly I haven't gone back and watched the game but from my seat it did appear we were having a bit of a tough time getting separation which is what caused a lot of the throws into traffic. Gonna need more production from Davis and/or Ray. This offense could be lethal if Sammie had stayed to threaten the defenses over the top.

4. OL- Overall a solid game. Pass pro was solid throughout, run blocking improved as the game went on. The issue here was penalties. We had 4-5 holding calls, on a different player every time. One called back a TD and the other stopped a drive that had moved into the redzone. Got to clean up that area. We can't afford those drive killers.

5. Defense- looked really good early. Our first 11 should be very solid. Depth is going to be a big issue though unless some of these freshman grow up quick. Lawson was obviously a beast, Matthews an immediate impact, and I liked what I saw from Adams and Russell inside. Lawson has to be healthy though for this team to get where it wants to be and I don't know if he is going to be able to do that.

6. Special teams- Punting much improved, KOs great, Long FG nailed. Overall very solid game from them.

The game went about how I expected minus the turnovers and complete collapse of the defense in the 4th quarter. Luckily they were in a giving mood as well so the bonehead mistakes/first game jitters whatever you want to call them kinda evened out. This still looks like a 9 win team to me that could go up or down a win or two depending on luck and injuries. We can certainly improve which is a good thing because we are going to have to if we want to have a chance in the west.

I agree. I expect 10 wins unless JJ proves to be a more complete QB than I have seen to this point. I don't expect him to make the bad decisions all season, but in the end his running threat handicaps the O in the years we have seen it most successful.

I would assume the need for freshman on D is also at some point going to be a liability. Though they played well.

I'm assuming you were at the game and didn't hear that Roc and Jovon were banged up. That's why Barber ended up with all the carries

Good stuff.

Stick to game eval, Randy.

Stay away from recruiting.

Reasonable analysis.

Expect all three RB to continue to play. JR looked powerful, need two healthy RB in every game.

I think the Oline was a disappointment, but that takes time to jell, played better in second half and UL had a solid D.

JJ played terrible. Big arm, but poor decisions. That hopefully is correctable.

I thought the OL played much better when Danzey replaced Kozan. Defense played well. We had trouble keeping their Qb contained late but we won't face another Qb all year with that kind of speed and quickness. My worries are staying healthy on defense and JJ's decision making. He made a few poor reads on the zone read in addition to the int's.

I was at the game and just started watching the replay. Was Kozan bad or did he get hurt or something? He was so good as a freshman. Hopefully it's not a case of the injury preventing him from ever getting back to where he was.

I don't believe that Roc will ever be the every down back. The other two were more impressive yesterday.

I didn't see him get injured. He didn't seem to be getting much of a push.

I agree with all of this.

I'll add that if JJ was more conservative with those throws then this game would have been a blow out.

Next week we have a cupcake to work out JJ's issues. My main concern from this game are injuries and penalties.

Kyler Murry for the Faggies is just like Lamar Jackson and played a lot yesterday.

A&M is going to be a nightmare with those receivers.

Murray is athletic. Don't think he is on the same level as Jackson. He made Rajon Rondo look slow in that clip they showed of the 2 racing.

Looked to me like he is not in football shape.

I dont understand why Gus cannot trust what he sees at practice. Need to pick 5 and stick with them.

Solid

Mistake filled game for both teams. Felt we got called for holding and they didn't.

Hoping above all hopes JJ had a bad first game, but the INT's and almost INT's are quite worrisome and have seeded some doubt about him.

UL's D was a very solid unit and cannot be overlooked when assessing JJ or this game.

Monty's play excited the hell out of me.

We were a different defense with Tray Matthews even with Lawson out he made us better.

Our DE's crack down too often, and don't know why with a QB with that ability they didn't play to contain more.

Hoping Lawson's health won't be an issue all season long. We need him in badly.

Hoping the option read is used more and Malzahn is holding back like usual.

Sadly I just admit last nights team is not championship yet, but has potential to mold into one.

Finally, would have loved to see UL's QB in Malzahn's offense, dude was something else.

From what I remember he was pretty high on Auburn last year but it was a question whether or not he was even a take. Don't know if we passed on him or he just decided to go elsewhere but he had a lot of interest in Auburn.

Gus said all week that both Kozan and Danzey would play. I feel like they're giving Kozan a shot to probe he can go but ultimately I just don't think he'll ever be the same. He was out of football and weight training for more than a year.

We passed on him. TBH I don't see Woody Barrett as any better (smaller, slower, both raw passers) which makes the decision to not take Jackson questionable.
