Penalties. We had 8 penalties for 80 yards that almost cost us the game. We had at least 1 TD called back due to penalties, and multiple penalties that put Louisville into better field position or kept their drives alive.

Penalties were an issue last year and are an issue again this year. At what point is this a failure in coaching? How do you rectify this?

I don't think you can blame coaching on the penalties we had for the most part they were effort type penalties

I was glad we did not have an personal fouls or conduct penalties which are really stupid and show a lack of discipline and coaching like last year

some of the holding calls were questionable I have seen crews let them go and I did think that Louisville held several times and were not called for it

It actually has been discussed, but feel free to start a thread about it as it might be the first thread on penalties.

I personally have mentioned it 4-5 times and we had several pages worth of discussion on holding calls

IIRC, there weren't many procedure penalties -- false starts, illegal formations, off-sides, etc... those are mental mistakes and are more an indictment coaching and/or a team's mindset IMO. I also not remember any penalties on the defensive backfield.

The ones I remember were the holding penalties and Garrett's facemask... these shouldn't be on the coaches, but that's my opinion... most of those are just dumb luck.

We cut down on stupid penalties IMO. You could tell it was stressed about hitting late near the sidelines which we had none of. Those were the penalties I had a problem with last year.

The holding on Braden Smith on the TD pass was flukish. He tripped on someone's foot and was falling backwards. It's either hold or let him run free to Johnson. In that case you probably should hold and you might get away with it

You can definitely credit 15 yards to Gus though

good point.... 15 yards of the 80 was on the coaches.... 65 yards in the first game (with a bunch of new starters on offense and a brand new defense) isn't bad.... and should get better moving forward.

I think the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when CGM complained about the hold was a coaching snafu.

And it was incidental, not deliberate.

yeah that beautiful touchdown pass to Jason Smith that Rocky was getting a chubby over was impacted by holding.

Pretty sure that was on Grimes. He let the ref have it pretty good from what I have heard. Used some not so nice language.

The hold on the long pass should never have happened. First we have the center basically go to block air. The hold itself was the correct call.

We had 2. One a facemask, the other from the bench. I do agree though that it was nice not to see our guys hitting guys late for no reason. We were physical on defense but it was all between whistles which you like to see

Not surprised with the penalties in the first game on OL. If these continue this season I will be more worried but I am gonna chalk it up to OL still trying to gel

Penalties is a lack of focus. If it was week 10 instead of week 1 I might be worried

You're correct, it was on Grimes.

as long as we don't tackle five yards OUT OF BOUNDS, three times a game, I'm happy
